I had read the thread to vote against not offering that delphi compiler or swhatever it was for free and I even voted. I hadnt however had any intention of actually taking a look at the language at all. But sitting here with nothing to do got me a bit curious. i had seen a lot of programs recently written in delphi and I thought it may be worth looking into. From what i gathered it looks to be a bit different then C, and maybe even a little more visually oriented. Almost in the way visual basic is. Are my assumptions correct? I would like to know more about it. If anyone could give me a description of the language, maybe some of its strengths and weeknesses that would be really cool. I guess I could just google for it. But I''m lazey. I did managed to check the gamedev rescources and there wasnt anythign there on delphi game programming.

Delphi seems like VB? No waaay. Delphi is Object Pascal with a Visual Developing Environment around it. Some of the syntax is equal to C, some now. I found the switch from Pascal to C++ very easy and I was almost direct comfortable with it. Only crap thing about Pascal is the variable declaration, it''s kinda confusing after using C++ for 2 years. Also, I don''t use Delphi.

Well, yeah. It''s capable of games, though most people use C++. (todo: insert games made using Delphi here --Alimonster).

Bear in mind that although Delphi is highly capable for RAD work, it can also be used for low-down Win32 stuff as well in much the same way as you''re probably used to in C++. You can write your message pump in the usual fashion if you want.

Delphi has a bucket-load of kick-ass component sets (GLXTreem, PowerDraw, Project Omega, GLScene, DelphiX, DGC, GameVision...). It''s very easy to create games quickly in Delphi due to the abundance of those.

You have to know where to ask questions, though (e.g. the Turbo forum here or especially DGDev, which is DelphiGamer''s forums). That''s the major problem - it''s not as widely used. However, the community is pretty helpful.

I used Pascal/Delphi as my starting language, as someone said, the switch to C/C++ is really easy afterwards.
Delphi is RAD, so you just placee a component, and write the code, so it is similar to VB in that respect, but the language is different as far as I know

When we fall, earth will die, sun will set, and moon will shine, and the only image will be the Raven''s shadow in your eyes. So it is written, so it shall come to pass.

Yeah thats what I was refering too.. thanks for the replys. Maybe I''ll look at the laguage later on. Since I may as well just focus on C++ and eventually learn MFC if I really want easy window creation.

You should definitely check it out, I just started messing with it a few weeks ago. It''s extremely easy to make a nice GUI application out of it, I don''t think I''m ever going back to VB (or MFC, yuck)

Yes, I do. I use it to write tools like IDEs for my scripting language, Map Editors, etc..

I don''t use it to write game because I would loose to much of the liberty of coding that I like about C/C++...

Overall, it''s a pretty good language to know, if you plan on becoming a programmer analyst as Delphi and VB are some of the most commonly used language to write apps.

If you want RAD with c++, use Borland C++ Builder. It''s made by the same people who made Delphi, and it''s very good at what it does.

Actually, if you read about it, you''ll learn that it''s made around the Delphi VCL. And it''s partly made using Delphi. And that''s from the Borland book that comes with BCB when you buy it.
