Hi, How should I go about starting a (as small as possible, definitely for starters) 3d graphics engine? I have programmed alot, know C++ pretty well I think and have done quite a bit of openGL (made games and such - I love making addictive ones that have no end . . .) and have gone through quite a bit of WinAPI programming (although I must admit I''m not entirely confident with it - I''m learning as well though) but I wouldn''t have a clue at how to make a graphics engine. I''ve ordered 3d Game Engine Design (Eberly) - supposed to be a good maths book, maths'' no trouble for me and I''ll go right through it as soon as I get it Does anyone have any ideas other than that book, eg. tutorials or websites or such? Thanks!

First step is to decide what you want to do with your engine. For example I''ve been working for nearly a year on a terrain engine, which obviously has a very different structure to one that would be used to create Homeworld / X-wing games or the next version of Doom.

Even when you have the game genre decided on, there are still a lot of things to think about - using the earlier example my terrain engine is intended for strategy games and has a fixed camera (it gives a first person view from each unit). As a result I don''t have to worry so much about frame rate and the fixed camera allows me to simplify the culling and level of detail algorithms.

Hope that helps a bit and good luck,

Jon.

lol I suppose I am a bit ignorant at that sort of stuff. "You can just use the same engine for every game you make!" *shrug* I think that I may try and make a FPS engine . . . I think that they are the easiest, although I''m probably mistaken.
