SPRITELIB CONTEST - Aftermath
When you announce the winners, do like the IGF and give awards for several categories. You''ve only gotta give the prize for the overall winner, but I''d like to see what you guys thought had best visuals, sound, animation, use of humor, original theme, use of sprites, etc.
We''ve got a lot of entries, and I don''t think the overall winner''s gonna be clear-cut, so you might as well mention what you liked in each entry.
(my byline from the Gamedev Collection series, which I co-edited) John Hattan has been working steadily in the casual game-space since the TRS-80 days and professionally since 1990. After seeing his small-format games turned down for what turned out to be Tandy's last PC release, he took them independent, eventually releasing them as several discount game-packs through a couple of publishers. The packs are actually still available on store-shelves, although you'll need a keen eye to find them nowadays. He continues to work in the casual game-space as an independent developer, largely working on games in Flash for his website, The Code Zone (www.thecodezone.com). His current scheme is to distribute his games virally on various web-portals and widget platforms. In addition, John writes weekly product reviews and blogs (over ten years old) for www.gamedev.net from his home office where he lives with his wife and daughter in their home in the woods near Lake Grapevine in Texas.
I had technical difficulties with:
The Tailgator - the alien bitmap was mangled sometimes
Go Karts - crashed my machine twice, couldn''t start
Radik - The top portion of the screen was mangled. (Did you hand-write your blits? It looked like the surface pitch was off.) Also, as soon as I press space I die.
Caelum - The game ends really fast without me doing anything. (The computer players do all the work.)
Nuker Fleet - Couldn''t run. But I am under the listed system requirments. (I have a P200, says it requires P233.)
And here''s some thoughts:
Bugman - What exactly is said when you score an extra life?
Whoopi - More than 1 hit would be nice.
Shmup - You shoot a little too wide. It stinks to be right in front of something with guns firing, and go around the target. Plus having a few extra lives would be nice.
Gen''s Gold - The camera scrolling in the direction you are facing is kind of neat at first, but it gets kind of annoying. Maybe it should just move when you move the character in the direction.
If your game isn''t listed, I had no problems with it.

Tailgate was nice also but there was some problems with graphics flickering.
NukerFleet was an OpenGL app which didn''t like my multimon configuration (like all other OpenGL apps) was a bit lazy to turn it off and test it tonight.
Whoopi just crashed on me.
Well, I guess I''ll just have to wait for next contest to enter my game. :D

Sorry if you had some trouble with The Tailgater. I tried to see if it would work on other computers and it did over here. Best I could do for testing with the time allowed

Jesse: Sorry about the Camera in Gen''s Gold - It was a quick rush game (3 days remember

I''m gonna be building up a list of things to do for the Final Release of Gen''s Gold. One of the first things on the list is the Camera - It''s Fux0red. I''ll also add a Water Engine & Teleportation Engine, and perhaps the ability to Morph into other characters and Fly. That should make it more phunn

If you remember, in many platformers (Super Mario, Sonic, etc) the first few levels are really simple. Almost anybody could get through them their first play. It''s later on that they start getting hard. But by then the player is hooked and is really used to the controls. (That might be good advice for everybody who writes a run and jump.)
Great work, though. Especially for three days. I spent longer than three days on mine and I can find lots of problems with Bugz.
