I was just wondering if anyone here actually is in the dreamcast development scene? Also, where could I get some tutorials on how to program for it? Is the learning curve somewhat like programming the GBA? Thanks.

go to www.dcemulation.com/phpBB

plenty of info there.

once you get the software setup (which is literally the hardest thing you''ll ever do, even programming) everything else is normal programming.

i need help!
i''m doing DC Dev work and can''t seem to get the cross-compiler to work.
i keep getting these error messages:

(there is a whole screen of this)
C:\DOCUME~1\Clothere\LOCALS~1\Temp\ccCGbaaa.s:28667: Error: Unknown pseudo-op: .ualong''
C:\DOCUME~1\Clothere\LOCALS~1\Temp\ccCGbaaa.s:28668: Error: Unknown pseudo-op:
.ualong''
C:\DOCUME~1\Clothere\LOCALS~1\Temp\ccCGbaaa.s:28669: Error: Unknown pseudo-op: .ualong''
make[1]: *** [tradcpp.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory
/home/Clothere/build-sh-gcc/gcc''
make: *** [all-gcc] Error 2

from what i''ve been told it''s an assembler issue. but how do i fix it?

i''m using msys and Dev-C, in case anyone needed to know.

I just bought a DC last week to start hacking on it

OK are you trying to compile the gcc-sh yes? With what compiler? It is possible that the binutils with Dev-C++ are not the correct version. I haven''t yet tried the DC toolchain setup yet, I''ll have a go at getting it compiled tonight and let you know.

Incidentally what hardware are you planning on using to transfer the code? I''ve ordered a NeoGeo->DC serial cable and the bits and pieces to hack it up to the correct line voltages etc. I''d have liked to use the BBA but can''t find em anywhere oh well

Right now I''m using MSYS and MingW (Dev-C++). Cygwin is too huge and my dial-up will burn into a righteous fire if i try to d/l.

That is a possibility. I''ve downloaded everything and nothing seems to work, even different versions. What are you working with, anyway?

Well I haven''t done any thinking about that yet, since I can''t even get this to compile. Let me know what you turn up!

And if anyone else has a solution or suggestion please feel free to tell (let it be helpful and constructive though), thanks

Can't help with setting up the cross compilers under windows, sorry. I did it under linux and found it a cinch.

You can still find Dreamcast BBAs on ebay, though they tend to be expensive. You can also google for something called a 'Dreamcast LAN adapter' which allows uploading binaries, though not playing games through a broadband connection.

The other option (which is much slower) is to make or buy a coder's cable. www.lik-sang.com sells these pre-made for $25, or you can google around for instructions on making one.

hey cheese!
how did you set up your binutils and gcc (and what version?) ?
could you copy and paste it here?
then maybe i can get an idea of what is going on.
thanks

Yeah, the LAN adapter appears to be an early version of the BBA, I doubt I''ll find anyone to supply here in UK

I''m gonna make a coders cable (assuming the supplier I''ve ordered from weren''t lying on their website ) once I get the bits.

Hmm, thats the first I''ve heard of MSYS, I''ll dl and take a look at it. I''m about halfway through a cygwin download (I''m on 56k modem, it''s not too hellish but you need to pick the packages carefully).

www.lik-sang.com (sp?) has the LAN adapter.
maybe you should try that.

Hmm, according to their news, the ''LAN adapter'' is an early (or at least different) version of the BBA, they don''t appear to have a separate ''LAN Adapter'' product, unless I''m blind (link anyone?).

I used GCC 3, IIRC. I don't remember the binutils. 2.11?

This tutorial works for linux, If I'm remembering what I did correctly:

Edit: The LAN adapter is/was some sort of oddball version of the BBA. Somehow a large lot of them made it to the US, even though US dreamcast games don't support them. They look very similar. I think you can only tell them apart by serial #. Don't know for sure - I have a regular BBA. They run just as fast as the BBA for uploading code, though.
