Hi, Ive recently completed a ''Visual Programming'' class at my university where I learned VB and Java. Java seemed like a pretty cool language so i decided to take it a bit deeper then the boring ''prove you know how to use the widgets'' programs required in class, so i began to search the net for java programming resources. I found the old Black Book of Java Game programming availible for free on a few websites so i downloaded it along with a few other java tutorials. One thing i noticed though was a difficulty in finding comprehensive Java game programming websites. It seemed strange because there are soo many dinky little java games out there that there has to be some sort of community helping people along the way. So basicly does anyone know some good links to Java game development communities as this section of the forum seems pretty slow.
This brings me to another thought. I figured there may not be as many resources because when you get down to it, handling 2d tile maps, or displaying animated sprites is generaly the same in all languages as far as the algoritms involved. So here is another question, how much game can Java handle? Has anyone made a 2d tile game and tested the boundaries of the Virtual Machine? Basicly how complex did you make your java game before you realized that loading times or memory limits have been hit. I am thinking of creating a overhead 2d wildlife simulation type game, but wondering if it is even feasable, so far i got little images of lions and zebras bouncing around on the screen, but what about when i want to implement the enviornment around them, will Java be able to handle an enviornment of any decent magnitude?
basicly...
1) Anyone know any good Java game programming communities?
2) How fancy have you been able to make your Java games while still keeping them practical for play on the web?
