How do you guys get motivated in to making games? Well, not making them, but FINISHING them? You hear this question ALL the fucking time, and it''s from people who want to make games, but can''t program, or do anything useful to make one. I want to know because hell, I love making games, and programming is the only thing I can do, but damnit, I get started on these projects, and I never want to finish them! Is something wrong with me? Carmack said once, I think, somewhere... that making games isn''t hard, it''s FINISHING them. Or something like that. Anyways, I gotta agree. What motivates you people in to finishing a game? -AfroFire

LOL I have seen this thread so many times...

But motivation is a really big issue with programming for me. I''m sitting in teh car on the way home, thinking that if I had a laptop with me I would be programming hardcore and making all these cool ideas I have. As soon as I get home and turn on my computer though: "Maybe just one quick game before I start..."

I started (read: first 20 lines of code) about 20 or 30 programs before I even finished one to a state that it could compile. The first program I actually got to a usable state was for the ASCII fishtank sim competition. Because it was ascii graphics, I didn''t get bogged down in the detail of the graphics stuff like I usually. As soon as it was playable, I had plenty enough motivation to continue on into the night, and pick it up again easily the next day.

My advice to get motivated is to get to a minimum-yet-working state. Hold on long enough to get this far by adopting a minimilist approach, and don''t write good code . When it actually runs and you can see stuff happening, then go back and bit-by-bit upgrade your code until it is a masterpiece .

Anyway, those are my views. I''m not speaking as a professional (I have only made 3 or 4 working demos), but it seems to work for me.

Good luck!
