just a few random questions, thanks: - while im not nearly good enough to implement it yet, but just for future reference, i was wondering whats the best way to simulate night time? the heightmap terrain engine im working on i want to have basic day and night time..whats best way to simulate night? i was thinking just drawing a big blue translucent quad over the entire screen but that would just make all the objects faded and hard to see, it wouldnt make everything have a blue hue to it. so whats ur suggestions? - this is related to one of nehes tutorials but for sake of keeping 1 thread and the questions ambiguousness, ill post here: he stores his heightmap data as an array of bytes, like BYTE g_HeightMap[MAP_SIZE*MAP_SIZE]; is there any real reason to do this or is it simply what he chose to do? i mean what would be worng with making it an array of integers? - last question: can u recommend any books that cover topics like octrees and bsps, portals, etc? ive gotten books on opengl but they dont cover these topics, just the api itself. thanks!1

1) i dunno, but there have been a few threads about this that went pretty in-depth... the search feature is down, but maybe you can find them anyway...

2) bytes take up less memory than integers...

3) dunno

so why ever use an int? why ever use ints for arrays? if bytes are so much better

it''s all a matter of what kind of range/precision you need...

For the nighttime thingy....

I assume you''re using lighting in your terrain engine - so just apply a blue/purple darkned color to your ( directional? ) light and every thing will appear like having ''shades'' of that color...
