Hi, I have a project at sourceforge.net and I want to add my files to the CVS. I''m using cygwin and I managed to install ssh and cvs but I don''t know where to go from here. At the sourceforge site they tell me to log in using: cvs -z3 -d:ext:developername@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/softwire co modulename but what is modulename? I''ve read a few CVS tutorials but none seem to explain what a module is or how to create one. Can someone help me further? Thanks

Anyone know a better place to post this question?

Read this: http://cvsbook.red-bean.com/cvsbook.html#Starting_A_New_Project and this: http://cvsbook.red-bean.com/cvsbook.html#Checking_Out_A_Working_Copy.
The module name is what he calls "myproj".

I''ve looked at the source, and there are pieces that are good and pieces that are not ... My experience and some of my friends'' experience is that Linux is quite unreliable. Microsoft is really unreliable but Linux is worse. -- Ken Thompson

Dear Arild,

I already read that tutorial, but didn''t understand half of it. I''m totally new to UNIX but I don''t want to learn the whole operating system just to set up my CVS. All I want for the moment is load my files into it so people can easily submit improvements.

So what is it/should it be in my case? I tried "softwire" but it doesn''t exist. Only "CVSROOT" exists but I guess I have to keep my hands of of that? So how can I creat one myself and what is it? It''s a folder, ok, but why do I need it? What is this line supposed to do:

cvs -z3 -d:ext:developername@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/softwire co modulename

Isn''t there any ''click to upload files'' button for dummies?

Thanks a lot.

That specific line will checkout a module called "modulename" from a CVS repository called "softwire" located at cvs.sourceforge.net. From your posts, I assume you haven't yet uploaded anything, so that command will fail.

What you need to do first is import your source tree. Basically - stand in the root of the tree and issue this command:

cvs -z3 -d:ext:developername@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/softwire import yourprojectname vendortag releasetag -m "This is the initial import"

This will upload your files into the CVS repository at sourceforge - however, it will not turn your source tree into a CVS working copy. You therefore need to check it back out from sourceforge to have a valid working copy:

cvs -z3 -d:ext:developername@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/softwire co yourprojectname

Do this from some other place in the filesystem - if you just check it back out in the original source tree you will have one big mess.

Check out www.cvsgui.org for some GUI oriented approaches. WinCVS is very popular, but I generally prefer a tool called TortoiseCVS, which integrates into Windows Explorer.

Thanks again Arild, I think I''m starting to understand how it works.

TortoiseCVS also seems like a nice tool!

New question

I accidentally created a ''SoftWire'' and a ''softwire'' module. How can I remove ''SoftWire''?

I tried "remove SoftWire", which returned "Removing SoftWire", but the module is still there.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Never mind, I found out I can''t remove, rename or move data in the sourceforge CVS myself. I asked the sourceforge team to do it for me.
