I remember that on some thread about billboarding, someone mentioned point sprites as a good idea. I know what point sprites are, but I don''t know how to use them in OpenGL (use them in DirectX). I found one thing about it, but it used nVidia extensions and said it would only work with GeForce4 Ti which didn''t sound right... Can someone point me to some resources on using them in OpenGL, without extensions if possible, else ARB extensions only?

I found a reference to point sprites at opengl.org. I think in their game development FAQ link..

Anyways, point sprites in OpenGL was all the rage during the release of Quake2 (AFAIR), so that might also help if you need to use google..

there is nv_point_sprite but in my opinion it is useless for eg particle systems cause
A/ youre limited to the size of the particles
B/ (major reason) it vant handle rotation of sprites
