Anyone see the news post today? This is my reaction: WHAT A HORRIBLE IDEA! Thats the last thing I want is a giant flickery ''game'' make in Flash or Java trying to make me go to a casino or buy some crap from a sleezy online store that just wants to spam you What do you think? Is making money for yourself better then pissing your readers off? PUNCH THE MONKEY AND DIE!!

? What are you whining about? What''s wrong with companies creating some harmless games in their webpages promoting their game. You don''t have to play them if you don''t want to.

On the other hand, if giant 640x480 game advertisements start popping up in my webpages that have nothing to do with the company, then I will be pissed (is that what you''re referring to?)

For instance, if ATI decides to make a giant fullscreen "Shoot the Goo!" advertisement promoting their Radeon cards, and GameDev decides to foolishly sign a contract with them... I will be very angry.

Consequently, GDNetters with no voices of their own will defend the advertisement, proclaiming "it''s a priviledge to come here".

*Gasp*, I''ve just sidetracked the topic.

The problem is that most people using the internet are there to "get the job done". This is why internet games won''t do too well. Same goes for advertisments that give no information, but are annoying (say radeon slime). This is also why google''s search result advertising is good if the ad is made well.

The fact of the matter is that barageing a user with advertising unrelated to what they are after is very pointless. It becomes even more useless if that advertisment can''t give any quick information (say slime dripping down your screen).

Many advertisers confuse internet advertising with TV advertising. Internet is active, whereas TV is passive. This is why the majority of internet advertisments fail.

The exception of course is kids, who find it hard to differentiate advertisments from actual site content. Also they are eaisly destracted by games and such.

I have toyed with the idea of game advertisments.

I don''t believe that flash/java games will do too well. I was thinking more along the lines of a game that you download to your comptuer and can play as a real game but also have embeded advertising and product placement, etc.

Do not meddle in the affairs of moderators, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

I''ve always felt basically anything done with Flash/&#106avascript/Java on the web was pretty lame, but from the standpoint of a wannabe game developer, I wouldn''t have a problem with making them if someone wanted to pay me for it

&ltDERAILTOPIC&gtSome ads, like the ads for racing gear found in the Gran Turismo series, can actually make a game better</DERAILTOPIC>

I don''t see any problem with this. I mean, all of us here probably want to make games for a living. This is yet another avenue for us to take. Something like this can only help programmers. Why curse something that has the potential of making your profession more desirable in mainstream society? If people shift their advertising from TV to games, then I would guess that all of us would be happy in the future.

Zefrieg (not personally, but just the idea): If all you want is MONEY and don''t mind annoying people. Sure its is a ''job'' for a programmer, but it is not a respectable job. Sponsor ads in games is ok (like Nvidia''s campaign, even if I have an ATI!), but ''dynamic'' ads for casinos that spy on your computer are HORRIBLE

I can''t stand internet ads, thats why I use a proxy. You can get all political on me BUT ITS MY COMPUTER MOOHOOHAHAHAA!!!

I like magazine ads, unless I am not interested in it. Its sort of fun to read computer game ads.

But on the internet just about every ad abuses technology, annoying and invading the innoent user''s privacy. Thats where all this SPYWARE comes from.

I have no idea how to interpret what Lode said... (JeffK maybe?)
