There are external modems... Why not external video cards? It is just an idea, but I was wondering if there are any problems with having an external video card. Would making it external have slower bandwidth to the mother board or anything because of the distance? Maybe people just think it is impractical or pointless to have an external GPU. I would actually like one, mainly because of my laptop which has a suxxor video card. btw, does anyone know if it is possible for me to set up a normal PC as a dedicated renderer? That would be pretty nice, and could probably boost fps i think. plus, i could try out some realtime raytracing or anything because it would be a normal fully programmable cpu.

I am pretty sure bandwidth to and from the video card would be an issue. Also, in the small enclosure, an external video card would get mighty hot.

Mostly bandwidth concerns. There''s also no reason any other component can''t be external, either. You just need to have the bandwidth onboard (2-3GB/s now, isn''t it? Even Firewire 800 can''t touch that).

I know firewire and such cant have that much bandwidth, but it seems like if there is that much bandwaidth within the motherboard, it should be able to extend the range of it using a cord. Does that high bandwidth actually require it to be so close? for example, is it possible to make an extension cord for an agp slot, or something like that?
