Hello, If i were to find out that the user‘s adapter supported hardware_vertexprocessing or puredevice, Is it a better idea to initialize the device with the behavior? And afterwards, should i allow the user to downgrade the behavior to mixed or software_vertexprocessing? Thanx in advance, Shambles

1-if You are using the fixed function pipeline then you should create a hardware_vertexprocessing device, and if failed create software or mixed vertex processing device.
2-if you are using the programmable pipeline use IDIRECT3DDEVICE9::GetDeviceCaps to find if the device support hardware vertex shaders or not.some cards as geforce2 support hardware TnL but no ardware vertex shader.if D3DCAPS9.VertexShaderVersion>=D3DVS_Version(1,1) then the device supports hardware vertexshader and you can create a hardware vertex processing device.if not then you should create softwarevertex processing device.
