I just installed the DX 9.0 SDK, and it asked me whether I wanted to install retail or debug runtime components, whats the difference? Which should I install, or both?

debug is basically just the retail version with a bunch of debugging info/options included. personally, i always install the retail version (gives better performance), but u might find the debugging stuff useful...

If you are developing a DirectX application, Debug version will give you useful information. Retail version, however, will not provide this information but it runs faster than Debug version. So, if you are thinking about developing a DirectX application, use Debug version. Otherwise, use Retail. Don''t worry, you can switch this later anyway.

i have found Debug is great for seeing things like, "Did i release that interface?" I have also found certain games FAIL to work in the debug version. Elderscrolls III Morrowind, Zanzarah and probably many more. I get assert errors. I prefer the retail version, although if you are developing constantly, debug might not be a bad idea. The SDK makes it easy to switch to the retail fast or Visa Versa. DXSDK\SDKDev\Debug or Retail folders have the setups.

you can switch from debug to retail and back in the dx control panel applet.

I would highly recommend Debug mode if you are developing a DX application.
I had a program I wrote which worked fine and I put the debug to level 5 and it told me things that I did that might cause slow performance.
So just because something compiles doesn''t mean there aren''t problems with it.
Keep this in mind.
Although remember to switch back to retail when you are playing games.
