What a clever title! Umm, I was wondering. How does everyone literally pronounce #include and #define? I say "Number Include." The reason why I''m asking is I was reading a book and they called the number sign (#) a hash sign. I could also understand hash include, include, sharp include, pound include, or whatever. I was wondering how you pronounce it. I thought my way was right, but it brought new light to the situation. By the way, the book was game scripting mastery. I''m liking it.+

I just say "Include," I''m yet to encounter a situation in which it wasn''t understood that I meant "#include" when I said it. So for the line "#include <iostream>" I would not say "pound include less-than iostream greater-than." That just sounds... painful to me, for some reason.

I usually only hear people pronounce it in conjunction with define, and when they do, it''s always "pound".

I see you have never helped some stupid classmates.
I''ve said that so many times.

I''ve certainly had to help stupid classmates before, but I''ve never had to explain how to include a header file (at least not that I remember). In the classes I''ve taken with really stupid people the first thing covered was how to include files. More often I''ve had to help people with logic, use of functions (including them isn''t much good if you don''t know how to use them) and, of course, page after page of unclosed lines of code...

Haha, it seems to me the biggest hurdle is the ";" concept for some people. I debug programs all the time for the lower comp sci students and elec-engineers and half of the time it''s those. The other half is complete lack of any structure/understanding of how to go about solving a problem given a set number of tools.

On the few occasions I''ve had to say "#include" or "#define" I said "include, with a pound sign before it, no before it. No, on the same line, imeediately before the word include." Well that''s that.

"Include"
"Define"
And if needed,
"Include"
"Define"
If they still don''t get it, then I would say something like "an include statement".

If they didn''t know there was supposed to be a # before include/define, then I would just laugh at them.

(and I absolutely hate it when people say "greater than/less than brackets". Ever listen to someone reading HTML code who says that? Pure torture.)

I had to help my little sister with lower division C++, and when I said char, due to my pronounciation, she typed "care", and I say "pound" before any preprocessor directives myself, of course that is because I tried learning C++ on my own before I actually came to a school that offered programming courses, and I developed a lot of bad habits I have to now unlearn. Although for libs, I usually will say it more of these lines "pound include iostream" followed by: "using namespace S-T-D semi", I only use semi for my sister... otherwise, blech.. the pain...

I just say ''include'' too
No need for saying ''number'' before that because the only include statement in c++ is that one (with the # infront of it)

I just say "include" or "define"

The # symbol is either a hash or a pound (depending on who I''m talking to). It''s a "number sign" if I''m talking to little kids =P

Never heard anyone say "pound include" before. At uni & work its always been either "include" or "hash include", with "include" being the most common. Possibly it also has something to do with country of origin. ''#'' is hash and ''₤'' is pound in Australia.

That would be sweet if we did say "number include less than font dot h greater than"

Well, I guess I''m all on my own on number include.

you might confuse british people with that.

quote:
The pronunciation of # as pound'' is common in the U.S. but a bad idea; Commonwealth Hackish has its own, rather more apposite use of pound sign'' (confusingly, on British keyboards the pound graphic happens to replace #; thus Britishers sometimes call # on a U.S.-ASCII keyboard pound'', compounding the American error). The U.S. usage derives from an old-fashioned commercial practice of using a # suffix to tag pound weights on bills of lading. The character is usually pronounced hash'' outside the U.S. There are more culture wars over the correct pronunciation of this character than any other, which has led to the ha ha only serious suggestion that it be pronounced `shibboleth'' (see Judges 12:6 in an Old Testament or Tanakh).

It''s weird. My brain says "number include" for some reason. It just fits for me.
