C++ owns the software industry!

Blindly following "the industry" is a surefire path to obscurity. Pick whichever works better for what you're doing.

C# is slower, (about as fast as java, as far as I can figure) but infinitely easier to work with.

I'm hip because I say "M$" instead of "MS".

C++ and C# are two different languages. C++ is a superset of C, and is much older than C#. C# is one of microsoft''s main .NET languages, similar to Java and C++ in syntax. In C++, you can use managed (based on the .NET framework) or unmanaged code. In order to develop for C# and managed code in C++, you must have Win2k/XP, the .NET runtime, and Visual Studio .NET. If you only have Visual Studio 6.0, you can only develop unmanaged C++ code.

As of now, C++ is what the majority of game programmers use to create games, so you might want to take that into consideration. On the other hand, C# has it''s strengths and I imagine it would be easier to learn.

Bottom line: Both are good languages. Try to learn a bit of each one and see which one you like better.

You do not need visual studio .net to develop c# apps, the runtime .NET framework comes with the C# command line compiler included and it will work windows 98 and ME as well. Managed c++ is really ugly IMO and even MS suggests using it only as an option for supporting legacy code, but use whatever you want.

Try Python with pygame. It''s very newbie-friendly. You can create a simple 2d game with transparent sprites, sounds, keyboard + mouse control and parallax scrolling background in about 200-300 lines of code.

All tools are free, and there are lots of tutorials.
