I''m thinking of getting one. Who here has one? How do you set it up so other ppl on the internet could see it, do you need a special server or any special software to make it work? Ta

I have the cheap little Logitech Quickcam and it works great at 30fps! Best I''ve ever seen for a what, $30 webcam? If you upgrade to oh say, a Quickcam Pro 4000 it''s 30fps @ 1.3MegaPixels! Anyway, if you just want your pals to see the webcam, you can get Logitech Instant Message Companion, and (as far as I know) as many people as you want can watch it. If you want the webcam to be like, on a site going all the time...I don''t really know what to do. Actually, there''s some software for that in Logitech ImageStudio (free download from their site), but I think that''s just for like, "shows". I.E. at 8:30-9:00 you''re online and such. (can you tell I like Logitech)?.

I have one of those QuickCams; came free with my computer as part of a promotion. Picture''s a bit grainy, especially in low light, but it''s alright I don''t, like, "broadcast" it or anything though ...

I don''t have one, but my friend does and he''s got a page on this site http://ww.com/ that allows anyone to view him when he turns his web cam on.

I don''t know why you''d want a web cam though...
I mean, every time you get on, you have to make sure your room is clean, you have to make sure you''re wearing pants and make sure your hair''s not a mess, & if you''re a girl, you''ve got to make sure you''re wearing something more than a tank to so that your bra straps aren''t showing, etc. etc.(Unless of course, you''re trying to make money off the webcam, in which case, you probably won''t be paying attention to clothes anyway since you won''t need it-- but I highly discourage this method of earning money on the basis of morality)

It''s not worth it in my opinion. The only reason why I would get it is so that my grandma and I can see each other overseas while we talk on the phone once a month to see how each other are doing. But alas, my grandma and my aunts & uncles all are pretty much computer illiterate. So boo hiss, no point.

Thanks for the link but thats $22 a month more than I wanna pay - does anyone know any free host's (not holding my breath here) that do it, or is it possible to host it on my own space ( i have some from my university ) but I dont know what kind of programs are needed to get it running?

thnx

EDIT: never mind - I think i've found one here

I shall check it out further, don't mind about the adverts.

Webcams are teh $uck!! Realy, though, I can't wait till the frame rate on a web cam is at 60fps so you don't get all the lag. I'd like to see people in real time, damnit! I figure that they need a program that accepts a firewire hookup if possiable, then uses that over the net. That might be cooler.

I use Dorgem. It''s a freeware program that takes one or more images with different intervals from your webcam and saves them to disk or uploads them to an FTP. The minimum interval it 1 second.

I used to have a webpage that would refresh the image every # seconds.

But how would you get a webcam to be as good live, as a DV camera is when you record? I''m wanting to go over the net with it, and I know that there is an incredible framerate drop over the net. If you''re lucky, you get 1-2 fps, or so it seems! I want to capture the movement much better so that it uploads and downloads faster to another computer with the same quality of picture as they have now. I mean if the framerate is better, then you only have to worry about set, clothing, and lighting preperation to get a good film-like quality to it. Maybe the next step in web-cam technology will alow us to use realtime professional transitions -- like they use on TV, over the web if you have multipule cameras.

I have one but it''s not really good for anything. I wanted to set up a page with a webcam (reason I bought it) but I still have no fucking clue on how to do that. It didn''t come with any kind of software for this purpose, and the only way I *know* to do it is to be hosted by some shitty 3rd party place. I wanted to run the picture as an updating JPEG from my own web server.

sorceror : I get a TCP_ERROR when I try to get to your site

I''ve gone and bought a webcam off eBay (fingers crossed it works) - so when I get it whats the process for setting it up so it''s accessible on the internet, I have some space granted by my university, could I use that or do webcams require plugins like activeX or something similar?

Thanks

There''s probably some way of setting up a streaming server - like RealVideo, Windows Media Video, or Quicktime - to play it in realtime. But that''s pretty damn expensive, it''s the tech they use for live sport broadcasting and stuff. You''re trying to do the same thing; the tech doesn''t care if you''re inputting from a webcam or a pro camera system...
