Thread forks

I was thinking that it would be good if a thread could fork at different points rather than having to creat a new thread every time the topic changed a little bit. Kind of like Winfile manages files and directories. I know GameDev.net uses a similar system just by looking at it but it could go a little deeper and better. Ignore the rest if you don''t want to here my idea... The topic author of a thread owns the thread that they started. If someone wishes to make the thread divide/fork at a certain point then they must ask the topic starter to do it - with a specified sub heading. This would save the user a lot of swaping between screens, refreshing and all that stuff. We are their, "Children of the Free"

Hmm, sounds like a discription for an ''Old School'' message board. Personally I think this style leads to much confussion. The only improvement your system implies is that one wouldn''t have to open each individual reply for a sub-thread.

It would create some confusion i guess but this would come down to how well people used it. Experienced users would probably help in solving this over a period of time though.

Perhaps it could be another button for posting. It could be called ''Linked Post'', or something along those lines. My thought is to have it create a post in the original forum linking to the new topin off-shoot. When clicked on it would, by default, open the topic off-shoot in a new page. Then, in the topic off-shoot, have a link at the top refering back to the ''parent'' topic, possibly to the page where the new topic started.

Well, the main reason why i would want this is because a lot of the time i feel that my response is relative to a post but frays far from the thread topic. Which i''ve noticed can ruin a good thread which i very annoying.

I''m not complaining on the personal level because i''m guilty too sometimes. I percieve it as a system problem which could or should be addressed.

I know what you''re getting at Paul but I think that your idea may overcomplicate things...

I wish there were more links to the most recent topics at the front/home page...

Also, I would really like it if it notifies me by e-mail or ICQ when someone sends a new message on a thread where ive posted at least one message.. or make it a check box so everyone can choose to get notified when something like that happens or not...

I think they had that feature before (or maybe im confused) but still.. it''d be nice if the message board had that feature included...

Well, what i was thinking is having it operate the same way Windows Explorer or WinFile handles directories and files. I can''t see the hardship involved?!

If someone wanted to create a subthread off someone elses thread they would either just do so or gain permission somehow.

Granted! Just click on ''Active Topics'' up at the top. It will list any topics posted to in the last 24 hours

I would really like it if we could make certain threads a subset of other threads. Just tab it in on the list. The reason is, I get kindof sick of re-writing stuff from a post I just made, but I have to to avoid confusion. Given that many of my inquiries now operate off of ideas I''ve already gone in depth on, it might be nice to have these subsets.

It would basically carry the implication that in order to understand this post, you must first read it''s daddy post. VERY USEFUL, at least in the design section, where things are getting VERY convoluted. Seriously, guys, consider it.
