how do I keep emacs from making a backup copy of my files whenever I edit them? After a while of not paying attention, I have a directory full of duplicate files that end with a ~ and it''s a pain in the ass to get rid of them (well, not really, it''s "rm *~", but I don''t want to have to type that at all).

Just dig through the info files, you''ll find it eventually. In fact, I think if you search for either ~ or backup, you''ll come across the instructions.

One day you will be glad you have that feature on... Or, you will hit yourself in the head, when something happens the day after you turn it off.

My train of thought(expressed as the URLs I went to, in chonological order) on solving your problem:

1) http://www.google.com
2) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=emacs+manual
3) http://www.gnu.org/manual/emacs-21.2/emacs.html
4) http://www.gnu.org/manual/emacs-21.2/html_mono/emacs.html.gz
5) http://www.gnu.org/manual/emacs-21.2/html_mono/emacs.html.gz#SEC114

That section tells you which variable controls the creation of backups.

6) http://www.gnu.org/manual/emacs-21.2/html_mono/emacs.html.gz#SEC477

That section tells you about variables, so you can figure out how to change the one discussed in URL #5

This is different from autosaving in case your computer crashes. This backs up your file moments before you save it, and in many cases retains multiple backups. These aren''t cleaned up automatically [although I believe you can set emacs up to do this].

Just don''t save files arbitrarily and you''ll never need this feature.

Yes, I know that, but you could save the file accidently, and lose the old version. But on the other hand it's probably useless, if you have learnt to save properly. I mean, I keep at really most 5 minutes of work unsaved. But that means, I save so often, that the good copy probably would be overwritten.

Edit: I'm glad that I have my protection routines, the server didn't respond when I pressed submit. So I lost what I wrote, but I always press ctrl-a, ctrl-c when writing posts on forums. I hate losing stuff.
