I was watching Xtreme Martial Arts on the Discovery Channel some time ago, and I noticed that sparring looks pretty ugly. All the theory and no application can do that. Could some expert martial artists make sparring fights look as good as choreographed ones?

Unless both martial artists are extremely good (and have near-flawless defense), I doubt it. Within a few seconds one person will have a noticeable advantage over the other person which usually ends in defeat. Unlike in movies, most people don''t stand up and keep fighting after being hit in the face multiple times.

This is just an extension of an ancient question: Why the hell does reality suck so much?

No.

When you throw a combo, the most you''ll do is 3 or 4. Any more than that, and you''ve either scored, or left yourself open. Its like that in a real fight too. Two people who know fighting won''t fight for very long.

Two masters come together, 5 minutes of sitting around, one kicks a few times and the other''s dead.

If a fight lasts more than 10 minutes, it usually looks like a slap fight, rather than two martial artists fighting. That''s why boxing has rounds.

you would never WANT your real fighting to look like movie fighting, because movie fighting sucks. You can see the moves coming from a mile away, the fighters all use the same moves over and over again, and they over extend themselves on these overacted follow throughs.

Besides, movie fights last too long. If a fight lasts longer than 10 seconds, you''ve screwed something up. You need to crush-kill-and-destroy as fast as possible (well, maybe not kill, but CRUSH AND DESTROY!!!!)

As a 3rd degree black belt, I can honestly tell you a real fight is nothing like what you see in movies. I don''t care how good Jet Li is in a real fight, most of the stuff you see him do in movies would get a person knocked out in real life.
