After an in-depth discussion in #gamedev, I decided to extend this conversation to all the forum-junkies. What is life? Why must it be organic? Wikipedia defines life as some that has: # Growth # Metabolism, consuming, transforming and storing energy/mass; growing by absorbing and reorganizing mass; excreting waste # Motion, either moving itself, or having internal motion # Reproduction, the ability to create roughly exact copies of itself # Response to stimuli - the ability to measure properties of its surrounding environment, and act upon certain conditions. What do you think? Can an AI be alive? Silicon-based life on other planets? - CD -------------------------------- There''s no place like 127.0.0.1

Probably. That definition is probably a close-minded look at life.

I might consider cutting that definition down to just "Reproduction" and "Response to stimuli".

Can an AI be alive?

This was an interesting question brought up in the book Prey , by Michael Crichton. Artificial Life is actually what''s being researched now. Isntead of programming for every possible case that an object can run into, you give it a few basic rules and have it learn on its own.

So if you can create a machine that can reproduce and learn, would that not be living? It could be similar to primitive animals.

I recall reading that life has many facets, of which any given field will choose a few to focus on and call true life.
If a plant cannot live according to its nature, it dies; so a man.

Well, you could make a worm that lives off of the world''s computing power. It''d simply make a clone of itself onto everyone''s computer, and sometimes respond to the user of said computer, and fend off virii and the such. In fact, that''d be a good idea even if it would be prone to abuse...

#Pseudo Code

while(1)
{
reproduce() #reproduces onto a random computer on network
gather_data() #talks to the computer user, "learns", AND since it grows, it''s metabolizing information in a sort of twisted way
communicate() #communicates to other worms to spread data
resist_deletion() #incase a malicous worm wants to delete this worm
evolve() #doubles itself, changes a random bit on the clone, if clone crashes, revert back to original, repeat
}

Good point man...(btw, how did you change you name??)

What are the ethics of that, though? It''s like bicentennial man. If AIs start to "live", can''t they become first protected, then (if they continue to grow smarter) become citizens? Of course that''s years away, but it makes you think.

Also in #gamedev we concluded that a life simulation on a monitor does *not* count as life as it has to move physically.

Move physically? Whyso? Does moving from one computer to another count?

Using that definition of life, AI can definitely be alove. Of course, using that definition, fire could be alive too (it can grow, temporarily store and change energy and mass, move, reproduce, and it responds to air currents, fuel types, etc)

Mabye, because it IS alive?

Wow, that thought just freaked me out.

What about objects such as plastic? They are inorganic , which brings us back to our first point. Also, about fire: same wite male mules... they can''t reproduce. Heh. But they''re still alive. There are exceptions to these things.

I would say life is anything that a) reproduces on its own and 2) responds to its environment. If you really want to start a debate then ask "What is intelligence/consciousness?"

Are we talking about something that just imitates being alive? Because that we can do, I''m sure. Any process can be imitated.
It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.
