There are many methods to head modeling, no one is really better than any other, its really a matter of preference. They only way you find out which method you prefer is to try a few.

Personally I prefer box(pologonal) modeling.

I suck at modelling on all levels. I also suck at making model editors. If anyone could direct me to a modeling tool that can export to user-defined formats (ie, can use a .dll plugin to support my file format), i would be grateful.

I second Yspotua on box modeling. Coupled with sub-division patches (NURBs is an older method and has messier cage geometry), you can crank out cartoony heads reasonably fast.

Detail-out is better for more realistic heads, or heads that require a lot of detail. (Aliens, demons, etc. with folds and other facial features.) You start with a single polygon and then build it up from there, polygon by polygon. It''s better than the box method in that you get FAR more optimized geometry, but it takes a looong time.

But then again, each person has their own particular method.

www.blender.org will do that, although no dll is required. You need to know Python to create your own export scripts.

I''d have to agree... poly modelling is by far the best way I have modelled heads... I attempted spline modelling but I found it irritating that you can''t see the progress of your model while you make it very easily... I use 3d max and have found using Editable Polys gave my best results... it has a built in sub-division section which makes things really easy...

NURBS if you want your face to animate, if not go with box modelling.

Animating a box modeled head isn''t anymore difficult with a nurbs head. You just have be carefull with your edge loops during modeling.
