For a very long time I''ve used an old version of Homesite 4 to make my webpages. It was a brilliant editor, simple and effecient. I liked how it did everything. I lost my copy and I''m looking for a good replacement. Dreamweaver seems too cumbersome to use for my taste (I''ve used it at school), not to mention too expensive. Any recomendations? Free is always a plus. And for all your wise cracks, notepad is not suited to my needs.

How long does it take you to manually syntax highlight all your code in wordpad, Mscgamer?

I''ve always used Crimson Editor for all languages but C++ and Lisp. It only does syntax highlighting, but you can use your browser of choice to easily preview =-)

He said "looks like wordpad" not "is wordpad"

Anyway, I use Netscape Composer. It''s awful but it gets the job done.

He also cut off the title bar for no apparent reason, and has never named the IDE. I shall, at this time, continue to infer that it actually IS wordpad in that screenshot and that the ''syntax highlighting'' is actually the result of somebody manually changing font styles.

I personally use either NoteTab, or an HTML-specific text editor... NoteTab Light. It''s great. Anyway, judging by your "no notepad!" reply, I''ll assume that you want a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor... I''d recommend Dreamweaver. On the expensive side, though...

There''s many other things than WYSIWYG that notepad can''t do. The two most important ones are probably syntax highlighting and easier tab and indention handling. Both helps you write html faster with fewer errors. But of course there''s a lot of more things that makes html writing much easier, without going as far as WYSIWYG, so why not use those? It''s pointless and really stupid to use a tool that makes you less productive than you could be. The best is of course if it has great text editing capabilities togheter with a graphical interface like dreamweaver has, but the OP said he doesn''t like dreamwaver and that it is too expensive.

I can''t really recommend anything though, but I liked hotdog, by sausage software a few years ago.
