I am about to embark on a games design project where I will have to use DirectX combined with OpenGL to make a game. I''m fine for the OpenGL part, but I haven''t a clue where to begin when it comes to DirectX, and our library has no up-to-date books on it. Can anyone give me any pointers to books and/or websites where I can start to learn about DirectX?

Download the DirectX sdk here. It contains a considerable amount of info as well as tutorials, samples and useful tool programs.
I also recommend Drunken Hyena's tutorials for any DX beginners.

Kind rgds,
-Nik

EDIT: However, I don't recommend mixing OpenGL with Direct3D in a same project - and since DH's tuts are primarily graphics oriented, I'm not sure if they are applicable if you do use OGL

Since I''m sure you''d like to at least poke around with the interface before spending money on a book, here''s a couple tutorials online to get you started.

http://nexe.gamedev.net/News/News.asp
http://drunkenhyena.com/docs/directx.phtml

Also check the Articles & Resources section of gamedev.net, someone''s bound to have put a couple tutorials up.

Also, MS did a pretty good job of documentation with the DX SDK - Download the SDK and use the help files that come with it. There''s a couple bare bones tutorials, and comprehensive information on every function.

A really great site for begginers is the following:

http://www.andypike.com/tutorials/directx8/

If you already know how to program in OpenGL you might find it a bit easy though. The other slight problem is that its for dx8 and not dx9 :/. But DX8 is mostly the same as DX9, so you can follow most of the tutorials and just replace all the 8''s with 9''s (e.g. #include <d3d8.h> becomes #include <d3d9.h>).

the other site i would recommend is:

http://www.gametutorials.com/Tutorials/DirectX/DirectX_Pg1.htm

These are for DX9 thankfully. And they are being updated regularly, they have all the basics you''ll need to get started.
