If I was working on a sentient machine, I dont think I would be writing it in assembly unless I wanted my head to explode.

maybe if the person who wrote it is truly excellent at it... but most people aren''t it also takes much longer (in development time) than using a high-level language (you also must rewrite it for each processor/platform).

BASIC has its place in the world.

insulting and threatening people will not get anyone to help you on your project, by the way... who wants to work with a psychopath who can''t see past his own limited views?

Do people still write assembler? Yes. But not usually for a complete program.

Modern compilers (even in BASIC) produce the grunt work which an employed assembler programmer should not be expected to write.

Would a good assembler programmer work with or for someone who abuses other posters on his thread? No.

Hmm, are you sure that Sagar, or whatever his name is, is related to the project in question at all?

You are the stupidest person I have ever heard from.
You don''t deserve to live in the gutters of the blood

Kid, I was programming in assembler before you probably could even reach the computer''s keyboard, so don''t cop that kind of attitude with me. I speak fluent x86, and know a little 6502 and 68000k from my Apple days. I''ve wrangled with memory-mapped graphics RAM, port masking and DMA channel timings in order to create my own fast graphics and sound libraries.

And funnily enough, I used to be a BASIC programmer, so many years ago I''ve lost count. Have you ever written relocatable machine language function and then stuff the opcodes into a string in BASIC and used FN ADR(SA$) to call it? So you can squeeze just a bit more speed out of that slow language? I severely doubt it, so don''t give me any of this "U MUST LIEK BASIC LOLOLLL!!!1" stuff.

With that said, I haven''t written a hand-optimized assembler routine for my games in -- ages. Does my knowledge of assembly code come in handy still? Sure it does, especially when debugging. But you are simply a moron if you think that folks willingly sit down and write modern PC games from scratch in pure assembler. (Outside of old-skool demo compos, of course.)

Your talking as if you plan to write this entire game, whatever, in pure assembler. Last program I used that was written in "pure assembler" was this little Norton Commander clone for DOS. Sure, it was only a 12k EXE file and was blazingly fast, but I sure as hell wouldn''t have wanted to touch the source.

I was actually interested in offering help; My assembly is rusty and I''d love for an excuse to brush off those skills once again. But, well, nevermind.

Sentient.Machines uses the biggest equations, and most
crazy, optimized code possible. People like you make me
mad. Real mad. IF I EVER MEET YOU, I'LL CRTL+ALT+DELETE YOU!!!

What a stupid person. Maybe you're one of those losers at
school, who thinks everything can be done in BASIC. Well
I have got news for you. Basically, people who like basic
are going to be finished off the face of the earth, and
never be seen again. Because of you, and all those stupid,
dumb programmer's just like you, my BLOOD IS BOILING LIKE
CRAZY, and I am really wondering about the state of the
programming community...

(!!!)

( big angry face, in case you are too stupid to see that,
like basic people...)!!!

Man, I hope that's a joke...
Assembly isn't the fastest language by definition.
It's the lowest-level language (apart from actual machine code) by definition, and nothign else.
Sure, if you can write perfectly optimized asm, it's fast, but it's pretty easy to write slow asm as well.

And I can't see why it should be impossible to do everything in Basic. Might not be easy, but why would it be impossible?

BUT, I didn''t say that. I told

assembly programmer. He used my
name, because he didn''t feel like

Ugh. I''ve heard that one before...

Maybe it was my evil twin who posted and said he knew assembler.

Give us more info; A website, some concept art, even a straight up, boring .PDF file with your specs in it, and I, er, my evil twin, might consider.

Up near the top someone said people dont generally use aseembly to write full programs, and i just thought id brag to everyone about my 1337 freidn who is a massochist and writes tons of WINDOWS apps in assembly, no HLA either.... ok yeah im done... lol, oh and btw, sagar... that was kinda a hitler esque (did i spell that right?) post... it kinda scared me...
When General Patton died after World War 2 he went to the gates of Heaven to talk to St. Peter. The first thing he asked is if there were any Marines in heaven. St. Peter told him no, Marines are too rowdy for heaven. He then asked why Patton wanted to know. Patton told him he was sick of the Marines overshadowing the Army because they did more with less and were all hard-core sons of bitches. St. Peter reassured him there were no Marines so Patton went into Heaven. As he was checking out hi

You know, its a coincidence that whenever posts like this happens, they nearly always blame it on a brother or friend or something similar, even though the writing style is exactly the same etc.

Also for your information, the area where you type your post, the text wraps, so you don''t have to press Enter all the time. It makes reading your post really annoying.

Noone even mentioned BASIC...

Anyway, assembly isn''t any faster than C/C++ - C/C++ gets turned into asm by the compiler. If you write anything in assembly, it''ll take at least 10 times as long as in C/C++

What exactly is needing done in assembly? The only part of Quake I thats in assembly is the graphics rasterization code, everything else is in C. And i believe that in Quake II there isn''t any assembly. As far as i know, the last game to make use of assembly for anything non trivial was Quake I - and that was in 1992 - 12 years ago...
