Do any of you know of an IM client that is made specifically for a LAN? I''m aware of Sametime Connect but thats more of an enterprise level program and I''m looking for something smaller, more at a work group level, say between 5 users. I''d prefer free just because we are testing to see if IM would be an effective communication tool for us, but if its inexpensive I''m ok with that. I just don''t want anything like $100 per user/seat. Thanks all!

Couldn''t you just run a local IRC server? Or is there a specific feature you need from IM?

I know Miranda has a bunch.

[EDIT]
........ And it's free!

[EDIT]
The only thing bad about Miranda is the user-customization time. But once you have it customized, it's perfect.

For god''s sake, just use AIM and have company/network screen names... so *easy*! ... of course, that requires an internet connection, so...

Ok, I am looking for a LAN IM client to shoot off quick messages to other coworkers. I just looked at Netmeeting, a little more than what I need plus its big and bulky. IRC server is probably out of the question as I or the boss really don''t want to set one up in the office or load irc clients on the machines of people that will use them.

Miranda looks promising tho, I might have to give that a try with the LAN protocols. There is a reason I don''t want to run AIM, I dont want to be dependent on the Internet connection, and I don''t want AIM in the office because all users will think its ok to run it. I''m looking for something strictly for LAN use, not Internet.

On that note, stop screwing up my thread.

How about email? Or net send?

heh, my apologize, I had to release some dumb-ass. I really suggest Miranda though. There are millions of ways you could accomplish it by using that client. I haven''t tried the NetSend LAN protocal, but I''m sure that would do justice.

At work (E-Commerce department of Computer Exchange) we use an intranet ICQ Client. Most sales assistants have one and all the office guys (E-Commerce, Pricing, Head Office) need one.

It''s pretty effective I guess, mainly for broadcasts sent out to the whole company or a whole department. Does what it needs to do I guess.

Well Email is what we are using right now but its a slight hassle for me to be on the phone and my coworker on the phone and then send him an email and have him send one back. Usually takes a while for him to reply to emails. I figured with instant messaging I can just IM him, and he could reply with a short and sweet answer fairly quickly. Net send really isn''t an option as its pretty much one way communications. And its a hassle to type net send user My question here. Not only that, but I''m afraid to hit the wrong button and net send the whole domain, so I''m really trying to avoid using that.

In all honesty I would use Direct Connect (DC++).

Added bonus of being able to Download files a will.

I wrote a LAN IM (it works on Internet too) for a VB Client / Server project. If your LAN supports UDP broadcasting, it''ll automatically broadcast the server''s IP to everyone. If I didn''t have to make a server, I''d of used UDP broadcasting for the entire thing.

Its called Yakker and you''ll learn to love the YAAAAAAK at the start =P

Enjoy:
