An e-petition is being started invoking all Linux users to request VUGames and Blizzard Entertainment to port World of Warcraft to Linux. Blizzard has been known in the past for their support to PC and Mac users with hybrid games. The aim of the petition is to have a PC/Mac OS X/Linux hybrid. Sam Lantinga, developer of the SDL API and ex-employee of Loki, is known to be Software Engineer of World of Warcraft since 2001. Among his duties in Loki was to port Mac games to Linux. World of Warcraft fans are hoping that the petition may encourage VUGames to fund the project. Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Neverwinter Nights, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory are among the games that have being ported to Linux by other companies. Knowing the wide-reputation of Blizzard Entertainment, it would be a boost to the Linux community to have a MMORPG of this calibre. NVidia has Linux and FreeBSD drivers, which confirms that the Linux platform is becoming fastly a Gaming market. The petition can be signed Here

OS X is unix-based
and Linux is sorta cousins.

The point is that Blizzard has a famous Mac to Linux conversion programmer
already. Sam Lantinga used to do that at Loki Entertainment few years ago.

He might be able to make a Linux port using Mac OS X version
of World of Warcraft.

Um no. Is it free? Nope. Will linux users buy it? Nope. Do online petitions work? Nope. Does this post belong here instead of the Everything Unix forum? Nope.

Using driver-support as ''evidence'' of Linux becoming a gaming OS is so ridiculous.
The Linux market is almost nil, as evidenced by Loki''s continued attempts for years to make a mark on it. This sort of thing shouldn''t even be considered until WoW''s initial release anyways. What''s the point of catering to a thousand Linux zealots if you have a million happy Windows subscribers?

I think a better way to think about it is "What''s the point of catering to a thousand Linux zealots if you have a million pissed off Windows subscribers?"

The SDL creator is working at Blizzard? Cool...

In any case, if I bought WoW I would get it on Windows, even if it was available on Linux. I don''t even have a live Linux installation at the moment (there were 8 gigs I was hungry for and Gentoo lost out).

Windows is the dominant gaming OS, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Linux is not a viable option for anyone who wants to play lots of games, and it''s not like someone who can afford a computer and an internet connection to play World of Warcraft can''t afford a copy of Windows.

It''s a monumental waste of time to port a game to Linux if it requires more than a superficial effort.

I think this petition might carry more weight if instead of putting our signatures we each put $10 down. Set up a "WoW On Linux Fund" and donate money towards it and tell Blizzard that if they release a WoW client for Linux, they can have it. Otherwise it can go to charity.

Not only would Blizzard appreciate the $$$ from the fund but it''d also let them know that people are commited enough to throw money at it and buy the client. It''s easy to sign an internet petition, but putting money to it takes it to a whole ''nother level.

Or you can just donate all that money directly to charity and go get yourself a windows computer and play all the games you want.

I just think that its a waste of time for this thing. I really dont understand why people make it so much harder on themselves.

Maybe people want to use Linux instead of Windows, but still want to play games like WoW, is that so hard to accept?

Some people want a PS2 and not a Gamecube, but still want to play Metroid Prime. Yeah, it''s pretty hard to accept.

It costs time and money to port something to Linux, and the potential gains are highly dubious. Who cares about the tiny Linux gamer market? Blizzard doesn''t owe them anything, and it''s not likely that they''d get much money out of it.

If ridiculously stubborn Linux users can''t be bothered to install Windows and still want the game, they ought to try BradDaBug''s solution. At least then Blizzard would have some sort of incentive to do it.

the sad thing is, i bet the majority of these linux kids had windows to begin with (thus still owning the installation cd''s) but deleted it for linux, and have no reason to complain (such as - i never had windows and don''t want to buy it), and are only refusing to reinstall their windows copies as a dual boot as a matter of spite against windows "i will never put MS back on my precious hardware!!11"

OMG, I just thought of the perfect charity! I mean, we''re talking about Linux nerds, right? Free as in freedom and all that... so how about the EFF!

Some people do not realize that those Linux users dont want to go back to Windows. Linux is far more superior to Windows. of course you need to be a Geek to make it work well. That is why some frustrated Windows users who tried Linux say it sux cuz they didnt know how to use their Linux.

The fact is that Linux can become a respectable gaming platform.
Some of you say Linux isnt. So ... tell NVidia they are morons wasting money on a few kids. NVidia has Linux Drivers. Why?
Because there is a market. Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Americas Army are games that Linux users buy. Why would those game companies make a Linux port? To waste money?

Dont you think the game companies and video card companies should judge for themselves which platforms to support? They saw something attractive to Linux that you of course wont wish to look at. I am not a Linux user. Yet I symphatize with the Linux community. I am a Mac User and proud to be so. But I dont close my mind to Linux people.

I will support them to have a World of Warcraft playable in their Linux Box. Games should be for everyone that request it. Linux requests games because they dont want windows, then companies have to please the Linux community the same way that they do Windows and Mac. By saying stuff about Linux without even knowing about it is like saying there is no electricity or cars in Africa just because you have watched some movies of African natives.

Come on, mature! You havent been to Africa so you cant invent blunders about it. There are cars, electricity, buildings and stuff in cities.

If you want to talk about Linux, then make sure you are a professional programmer. If you are a noob, and dont know squat, then close your mouth and dont give opinion on something that is unknown to you.
