Free Image Software?

I''m no artist, I''m a programmer with zero artistic talent. Image software is, however, a neccessity even for me. I''m looking for a decent free solution, that _can save .gif files_. I''m using ImageForge right now, and its good enough for what I do with it, but the lack of gif files upsets me. I can''t stand GIMPs interface, anything that opens 4 or 5 seperate taskbar windows deserves to die. Anyone know of any others?

I''ll second IrfanView, but it''s only good as an image editor - you can''t really make new images in it. For simple level changes and filters, though, it''s really quite incredible.

Have you tried the GIMP 2.0? They''ve done a lot of nice things with it, and it''s now officially supported under Windows. If you haven''t, I''d recommend giving it a second chance. The interface is, admittedly, a little awkward to get used to, but once you''re comfortable with it, it almost rivals Photoshop.

It''s still scattered all over the place. All they have to do if give the damn thing a bloody parent window. It''s not that hard. Yet they don''t bother. Worst. Interface Design. Ever.

I''d have to agree with the Gimp. I think the interface design is to facilitate the screen grab option. It would be more difficult with a parent window.

I just run The GIMP in a separate workspace.

There is a plugin at the gimp site that puts it in a parent window.

I really liked GIMP. I did not mind the Interface.
