I''m looking into a dynamic DNS service, and thought I would first get some testimonials from some people. Has anyone here used a DDNS? Were you happy with the service? What company did you use? Were their any kind of limitations? I''m willing to pay, I just can''t get a static IP (not offered to residential cable subscribers).

No-Ip does me fine, I've just got a free account where you can have whatever.no-ip.com to point to a particular ip address. They've got a paid service as well where you can get more fancy features.

[edit]If you're planning to host a server that will be publically accessable remeber to check your ISP's terms and conditions. I know some ISPs don't let you host any kind of server.

I''m currently registered with No Ip, its a free service and I''m quite happy with it overall. You can setup multiple DNS names for you IP with a variety of domain names styles to choose from.

You do need to download a small client which runs in the background to automatically notify them when your IP changes but it''s not obtrusive at all.

What do you actually need to use it for? If it''s something small you could probably get away with it.

I use dyndns. It''s free if you use one of their domain names. It''s where I get my jmickela.kicks-ass.net domain name, but you have to pay to have your own domain name. AS for their service, I don''t know, I''ve never had any interaction with them other than signing up and having it work perfectly after that. If it works this well on my linux system it probably works pretty well on windws.

well, I wanted to host a website for my artwork, and any programming projects I had going, so potentially it could be a large use of bandwidth just on images alone.

Do you think I would get a cease-and-desist before they tried taking action?

If it''s a personal web server (small bandwidth) most likely you will get away with it. It also helps to put it ona port !=80, because some ISPs scan their users to see if they have servers (ftp and http).

In any case, they most certainly won''t do anything to you at first besides sending you a threatening email.

Register your own domain name and pay for server space somewhere. It isn''t very expensive at all; you get more freedom with what you can do with your site plus a good address.

perhaps they were the ones trying to buffer overflow me. The ip address had the same first two groupings.
