Here's my problem: When my little game crashes(for any reason, vertexbuffer, reading file, etc...), the next time i'll try to run it, it crashes at Direct3DCreate8(D3D_SDK_VERSION); and I must reboot to continue debugging. Any idea?

I had that before under Windows 98 SE. It didn't always require a reboot, but around 1 in 5 crashes did.

No idea how to fix it though...

Did you look at the DirectX debug output (Forum FAQ)?

edit: wait, never mind. probably wouldn't be helpful for this instance. when your game crashes it's probably leaving the display driver in an internally inconsistant state or something - so that when you try using it, it crashes much more quickly.

Hi,

Change to an NT based environment as soon as possible. Better debugging tools and easier to catch memory leaks. A game developed for Win98 may fail on XP... and a game developed on XP may fail on a Win98... but its easier to downgrade to make it work.

Also... rise your debug level to maximum level... that helps a lot...

Luck!

Are you using MSVC to debug?

If so, you'll have to press enter then shift+f5 to break out of the debug process if a function fails at window startup...it'll lock the computer and there's no way to terminate a process that's being debugged.

I remember having the same problem when I was running 98 a few years ago. Although I don't remember solving it, I don't have that problem anymore (even though it's the same machine).

When i had that problem, breakpoints didn't help. It just crashed (access violation or some such) in the call to Direct3DCreate8(). The debug output showed nothing either. It looked like D3D had just decided that it was dead at the lowest level.
Well, thats Windows 98 for you :P

Not all, but a lot of apps will work on XP if they wored on '98. If not, then theres usually an alternative.
