I have abandond my uber leet 3d engine engine after realizing having a camera class and being able to move around a little box is not enough to make a good engine. I didnt even know anything about display lists or how to use fog or light and much more. Now my question is what things should I be able to do before I try to attempt my uber leet engine again? (I have made 2d games such as pong and a side scroller whith sdl already)

Look on this thread.
My post further down describes a few of the main modules a 3D engine should have.

Hope it helped.

I dont think you understand what I mean. I dont want to make an engine right now I just want to know how much and opengl I should know before Im ready to work on my killer 3d engine.

Instead of worrying about developing skills to make an engine, why not just find an existing engine and start making games with it?

How much you have to learn depends greatly on how much you want to do.

Write down the kind of project you would like to aim for, something you would like to have finished 10 months from now for example.

Then figure out the requirements for said project. Is it a FPS? Does it have bots? Then it require AI. It will also require path-finding. Will you support Pixel/Vertex Shaders? Maybe you should do a Shader Manager.

...etc...

Again, look at the list from the link I gave you, and go from module to module, and try to figure out what you would need from that particular module...
