Hey, just a quick question. I am installing Linux and Windows on the same system with a 20G hdd. It doesn''t seem to be working... ...I seem to recall a limit on the sectors that you could boot a system in, and I think that may be the problem. Does anyone know this limit?

Last time i was at the store, I remember seeing a version of Linux that was made to run with windows on the same computer.

WTF?!?

OK, there is a problem with LILO loading up at startup. It would appear that there is a problem with it being over the limit of the number of sectors / cylinders (?) that you can boot from (by 12G) I need to know the limit so I don''t wipe my windows system unnesseralary.

PLEASE BE AWARE: I CAN BOOT IT FROM A BOOT FLOPPY, SO THERE IS A PROBLEM IN BOOTING FROM HDD! (damn it Zipster)

Also. Linux has nearly always been able to boot on the same disk as windows. Resently, it has been able to exist on the same partition as Windows. This however is not what I am doing.l

i had this exact problem a while ago
i think the limit is something around 1000 sectors
the LiLo problem is directly related to this
you have 2 possibilities: reformat your entire hdd, install linux first, then install windows on the last part of your drive

2: cut down your windows partition so it only contains windows, defrag it so all the data goes to the beginning of the drive, install linux onto the next part and then have another windows partition on the last part of the drive..

OK, just could you clarify that... Do you mean this?

i think it can be at the end
try it

OK, thanks. I say laterz to you all, as doing this will kill my Windows system (and therefore, my modem) So, until linux is working, I bid you all a good afternoon, good evening and good night

Why? Oh well, I guess you won''t see this because your computer won''t be working anyway

I''m on to you nes8bit, I know why you are at the top of the posting rank. You just post to anything that you possibly can, don''t you.

But anyway...

First, I have tried to keep Windows alive as long as posible, and it still works, even after a thrashing with fdisk (from MS, I recovered it with the fdisk from linux). And now, I can keep Windows if I want (I don''t).

For those intrested, here is exactly how to fix the above problem:

First take a gun and shoot nes8bit . That takes care of that, now the problem above that one:

the bootable limit is 1024 cylinders (not 1000, but close, quantum). The best way to do it is have 1014 cylinders for windows (7G or so?) and then 10 for a bit of linux. You should mount this as "/boot" so you can boot from it. then after that, another linux partition as big as you like mounted as "/" then your linux swap partition.

If you want, you can put anything but the first 2 in a extended partition if you want more partitions avaliable.

So, remember:
You must put the booting parts of the system under the 1024 cylinder limit. Linux boots from "/boot", so just mount it there. Windows... err... like it was said earlier. boots from C: primary partition 1, and nothing else. (notice how it makes every effort to be the only OS on a system? (espessily fdisk, you know how you can only have 1 primary partition under that))

Espacially win Me , it wont let you dual boot with anything , however if you clean install win Me and then install Linux and let lilo be you boot manager you should be fine.
