I can't figure out if you're joking or not.

If yes, you have too much free time on your hands. And you're not very funny.

If no... scrap everything. The MMORPG, the .NET forums, the idea that you are anything other than a newbie. Pick a small, do-able game, and do it.

Either way, you do not need help on a MMORPG.

* Who is going to provide the server farms required?
* Who is going to provide the bandwidth required?
* Why does your forum not even exist, according to its host?
* How will you manage to combine two genres so opposite, that a union of them makes no sense at all?
* What sets your project apart from all the other fantasy/medieval MMORPGs that people are trying to make?
* Why have you not posted any information about your game that would make people want to join your team?
* What is your role on the team?
* Have you made any progress yet?
* Do you have a design document written up? If yes, is it more than 5 pages long?

I heard one of the big guns cancelled one of their MMORPGs because it would cost $30 000 000 to develop it and that was kind steep they thought :)

yep..
that was the WarHammer game.
Don't worry, there is no doubt in my mind that ryanb has the 30 mil stashed away saved up for a rainy day just like this one.

Seriously though, can we put a warning up in this forum stating that anyone asking for help with their new, exciting and brilliantly original MMO should just through some acid in their eyes instead of posting to save themselves the trouble of reading all of the sadistic posts which will follow their inquiry?

for gods sake man, go make tetris and galaga and do some Unreal Mods or something, once you realise that you can't pull those off perhaps you will see the futility of trying to make an MMO with two programmers, one of which(you) who just learned how to initialise a DX screen last week.

I think the problem with these people is that they don't even do the research to find out what mmorpg stands for, or even what the first letter stands for.

well we need some programmer, we probably aren't going to do an mmorpg because the team relized the work and money involved but we are thowing around some other ideas and are undecided on exactly what we will do, the position is still open for a c++ programmer.

You're going about this the wrong way. Don't work from scratch - you'll get nowhere, unless you have very meagre goals (like Galaga or Combat or something). Go make a mod. For example, if you want to do an RTS in a hardcore full-featured engine, there are RTS mods made for the UT and UT2kX engines (Unreal Annihilation being downright spectacular).

My suggestion: go find an open, free RTS or heavily moddable one if you want to do an RTS, and base your work off of that. If none exists, go for an FPS project and see if you can make an RTS of it. There are numerous open FPS projects, such as OpenFrag, Cube, or the Doom/Q1/Q2 engine updates. Or a free (as in beer) game to work from is Enemy Territory, wich is Q3 based and as such gives you access to a great platform.

But for shits sake start smaller. Do you really think that WC3 was made by a bunch've part time kids?

my suggestion, there should be a law against so many stuck-up jerks in one place.

Okay, no need to call people jerks. The point is this: you will get dick-all done on either of those projects without proper experience. Rome was not built in a day, and it was not built by unskilled hobbyists. It takes time to learn the tools and skills to make a game. It takes lots of time to do the work. It takes no time for good ideas, so unfortunately we get tons and tons of people coming through saying "I have ideas and a webpage, join my team!". We all have ideas and webpages. We're all waiting for our big break.

Fact is that, even if delivered harshly (and not nearly as harshly as usual) the advice is sound: your ambitions are unreasonable, and it is very likely that, due to inexperience, your ideas suck. Nothing personal, we were all unreasonable and idiotic when starting (I've several failed projects under my belt). But the fact is that you come in here to ask for a favour, expecting that people will flock to your vision.

If you come to the help wanted board, you'd better have either
a) something functional and hella-cool to bring to the table, something people will really want to get behind, with screenshots and demos, or b) lots of cold, hard, cash.

Well the other thing we could do is just ignore these posts when they show up. And we were doing a good job of it, too! His first post was up there for a whole day and didn't get flamed. But then Ryanb just had to push his luck by bumping it.

Well, sometimes we actually give reasonable advice. They're not usually as asshattish about it as this one - I think we were unusually polite here, and he was unusually crass.

Wow, I've never actually had the pleasure of _watching_ a user rating go down the tubes. Its now 940, and a moment ago it was 960. Dude, we gave you real advice: start small. Small doesn't have to mean Galaga, it can mean modifying existing games to suit your new design tastes.

Think of every bad game you've ever played, then remember one thing: it was made by someone who is way more qualified than you, with a bigger team and a bigger budget. I know that about myself - I'm still an amateur.

The road to success as an indie is humbleness and perseverance. I haven't seen much of either from you.

Heheh, I think he just went through and downmodded every person in this thread. Charming. So, Ryanb, you asked for help, which you're not gonna get, and you got advice, which you ignored. Which begs the question: why are you still here?
