This really frustrates me: all browsers like opera, mozilla, ... show the source code of this page instead of rendering it: http://www.nlpinfo.com/intro/txintro.shtml only in IE it works, but I don't use that browser. All that because that page has the wrong mime type, but can't opera (or mozilla) be told to ignore that cursed mime type and render it?

Content-Type: text/plain

Your server is telling the browsers that the file is plain text and are displaying it as such. It is infact IE that isn't displaying it right. [wink]

Edit: Never mind, I thought this was your page. Contact whoever owns the site (feedback@nlpinfo.com) and tell them they are idiots.
Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other

I used their feedback form for that (well not really to tell that they're idiots ;))

Problem is, this isn't the first time I encounter this problem. Many site designers don't care (or even know) about other browsers than IE, thus making such mistakes in their site without knowing it.

Such a site isn't standard compliant, but works in IE, and it's a shame that it doesn't work in other browsers in my opinion :(

Change the use of double quotes to single quotes in the META tag.

eg:

<META http-equiv="PICS-Label" content="(PICS-1.0 'http://www.rsac.org/ratingsv01.html' l gen true comment 'RSACi North America Server' by 'alchemst@nlpinfo.com' for 'http://www.nlpinfo.com' on '1996.04.16T08:15-0500' exp '1997.01.01T08:15-0500' r (n 0 s 0 v 0 l 0))">

It works then. Generally browsers get confused by double quotes within a single quote string.

But what if the server owner was deliberately trying to serve that page as plain text so that someone could read the HTML? If the browser always treats anything that looks like HTML as HTML, there are going to be times you wanted text, but don't get it. Since you can't win either way, I think adopting the standard makes the most sense.
