whats up everyone, i have been thinking up this mmorpg for a few months now and well id like to actually make it a game but i really have no skills except writing and web design... The game is called Ethorium and i am looking for java programmers for this game. A good comparison to this game would be runescape except the gameplay will obviously be alot different. Ethorium is the world and within it are multiple continents and places for players to visit. Ive got the ideas now all i need is the team. i need java programmers, and 2d/3d artists. if you got any questions just ask.

Question 1)

If you admit to having no programming skills, why have you already made the decision to use java and on what basis was that decision made?

Question 2)

"multiple continents and places for players to visit" is hardly an original concept. If you have ideas like you claim to, why don't you share them?

Question 3)

If you are a writer and are serious about this project, why haven't you written anything yet?

I think once you answer the above three questions and provide a foundation for your potential team to build off of, you'll get a much better response. I wrote a short story one day 3 months ago and that turned into my current game project (which I totally didn't intend it to). I think you should write at least a prologue/introduction of the story you want to tell and then try once again to put together a team. I believe many here will agree with me, though some may not. Good luck.

question one answer: java because i like the applet that can be played straight from a website without downloading anything.

question two answer: its pretty basic what i said??? multiple continents to visit where players can create their own housing, start their own buisness, wars will erupt, cities will be taken over, guilds can be created, hack and slash combat, not turn-based. multiple NPCs to interact with, quests to complete, rare and unique items to find.

question three answer: i already have the whole entire world map created, along with multiple quests written out. Also quite a few NPC interactions written. i also have a semi complete list of items such as armor, weapons, etc.

if you have ne more questions, ask.

Haha yeah, and you want to lead a team of programmers to do all the hard job for you.

Unfortunately good Programmers are already on their own project. You'd be better getting a programming book and learning the dirty stuff :)

Like a lot of beginners you don't realize how much work a mmorpg requires.

Don't make your first game a MMORPG, start smaller and work your way up.

Let the guy have his dream. People learn best from experience. Believe me it won't take much time to learn the degree of difficulty of that project.

I agree with what everyone just said. It sounds cool being able to build your own structures and live in a virtual world, but the amount of skill and experience it will take for your programming team to do this is off the charts. I don't think you have put nearly enough thought into this project and here's the proof:

You want to make an MMORPG java applet? Are you nuts??? First of all, "can be played straight from a website without downloading anything" is completely false. Everytime someone accesses your Java applet, they have to download all the java byte-code, images, sounds, etc straight from your webserver. Unless you have an infinite amount of bandwidth on your server, the sooner you forget this idea the better. I don't know if you you are planning to make this 2D or 3D, but Java is slower than other programming languages like C and C++ for various reasons, so your users will need to have more high-end systems to be able to play. IMO, java is a only good for programming very simple 2D games like tetris-clones and side-scrollers. I wish you luck regardless, but I have absolutely no faith that your ideas will become reality unless you get rid of your overly-ambitious plan.

I think these people now create these threads just to get a rise out of people all the time. How often is it that I read something that simply says "I have an unoriginal, impossible idea and want to do next to no work except tell people what to do, and it has to be free and easy to do. Help me now!"

If you really hate these kinds of posts, don't dignify them with responses. Stop showing them where to go, cuz if they were really serious, they'd find it on their own. Stop demeaning them, it only makes them stubborn and defensive and even more annoying. Abstaining from contact with these deluded, egomaniacal blowhards is the only solution.

If I were a GameDev moderator I'd have anybody who started this kind of "I'm making an MMORPG" thread banned in a heartbeat.

As ever,

xwfuro - Let me pose an anaology for your post. Imagine the following:

"I want to create a comic book series. I have a great idea for a superhero, a city, and villians but I need writers and artists because my English isn't great and I can't draw. I will be directing the series and telling everyone if their work fits with my idea. I can't pay anyone right now, but when we're done, we'll show the series to Marvel and DC and once they buy it, you will get paid."

Does that sound silly to you? It does to me and if it does for you also, DON'T POST THE GAMING EQUIVALENT HERE!

Now let's change the post:

"I want to create a comic book series. I have written a novel-length backstory, storyboarded a pilot issue with details on how each scene should appear (as I will for every issue) and written a document on every character, building, costume, vehicle and weapon (even the minor ones) in the series. I also have a general idea of where the series should go, but that could change as it evolves. I am looking for writers and artists because my artwork isn't the best and I'm not the most efficient writer. Click HERE to download what I've done and if you're interested let me know. I, unfortunately, cannot pay you right now, but if we all do our jobs well, I have no doubt that it will sell and make your investment worth while."

The second post might get people who are desperate to make comic books for a living to work with you IF they like your work. The reason is that you're making it as easy as possible for those who have nothing to gain from working on YOUR idea except for showing off their talents to the industry. As you can see, it involves A LOT more work than just an "idea man". In gaming, the equivalent of this would be a designer (who doesn't have to program, do artwork music, sound, or even story - YES there's THAT MUCH for a designer to do). If, however, you don't know how to make things as easy as possible for a content team then you're simply not ready to run a game project. Go here follow the advice of the very bright contributors to this site and come back when you're ready.

Now, you may be concerned with developing a design document and revealing it to the community for all to see and potentially steal. You're right, a complete design document is a risk. However, most people who start up (commericial) projects risk money - since you're not doing that you need to risk your content. This isn't to say you should be without protection - take your design document and register it with the copyright office of your particular country - that way if someone DOES steal and develop your idea - you get the money or can legally stop them - IT'S worth the nominal fee to register because it provides indisputable proof that you came first.

Heck, for all you know, suing somebody for stolen mental property could give you the kind of money you need to actually pay someone. Just a thought.

Your ignorance is killing me. Check out the game he mentioned : "RuneScape". It's a complete & full 3d java mmorpg. The graphics look like they were made in the 50's but other than that the game is a complete mmorpg.

My main point was not that he wanted to do it in Java, but that he wanted to do it in a Java applet. I'm no expert so I wasn't aware of Java being used for any major game project, but its nice to know that there is such a thing. Don't get me wrong, I love Java as a language and I think its great at what it does (total platform indepdence, protects programmer from memory leaks) but it does it at a cost. ^_^

"Eve of Destruction" goes quite well with the help wanted fourm.

I vote that it be made the offical theme song of help wanted.

I believe I just read something like that on the gamedev comics... I may be wrong ;)

Anyway, before posting such kind of propositions, you should do some hard/grunt work: writing a complete design document, learn programming (yes: you'll have to know what you can implement - obviously not a problem for a company game designer, but for a small team, it should be a big plus), and so on.

On the other hand, you are maybe the one that will succeed, so don't give up. I remember some threads on this forum where the OP tried to get some help and finaly got some flames. Obviously not a good thing, when you now see the results (can't wait a demo).

Thank you SO much, for that =)

we are working really hard to meet our deadlines, we had some slight team issues, but they are resolved now, and everything is once again full steam ahead =D
