I was looking at the AMD site for some reason(I forgot now) a while ago and noticed they have a new processor, the Semperon. I didn't pay much attention to it because I never heard of it in a computer so I assumed it was some sorta special CPU for like servers or something. Then I come across it again when I was looking at Acer laptops. What is it? Is it just AMDs new CPU? Linkerdoo

This is just a stab in the dark (seriously), but I think it's AMD's answer to Intel's mobile chips.

It's just the old Throughbred. The best Athlon XP buy for the desktop today is one of the XP-Ms beneath the 3000+ model. At least if you're overclocking...

unlike the Thoughbred it has 333mhz FSB but still only has a 256k cache falling under the Barton's 512k. They have both moble and desktop versions. Its the last go for the socketA, and aimed at people that need something solid and affordable, but not top of the line.

As robinei and Goober King have referenced, the Semperon is basically a clocked up Throughbred, designed as a stop gap to fill the budget role (AMD hasn't been investing in Duron advancement, Barton is too expensive [due to the expanded cache] to offer as a purely budget processor [though the after markup prices are very close], Socket A is being phased out...so basically they've dug up their obsolete high performance model, updated it without actually redesigning it to match their newer fab capabilities [so almost $0 R&D costs], and rebranded it for sale as a Celeron competitor)

The Sempron is AMD's budget processor for the socket A and socket 754. The socket A version has a 256L2 cache and a 128L1. The socket 754 version(Sempron 3100+) is like a socket 754 Athlon64 but without the 64bit processing ability.
