Sorry to hear that =-/
I was extremely dissapointed to hear Valve announce CS:S, and even more so to hear that it would be the only multiplayer for Half-Life 2. I guess it should have been expected since they've gone downhill and they are just a capitalistic company after all, but I was REALLY hoping for something a little bit different, like perhaps TFC touched up (not neccessarily TF2, but maybe TFC v3 or somesuch). I really am tired of all the psuedotactical eyecandy multiplayer FPS =-(

how have they gone 'downhill'?
I mean, technicaly speaking Valve have only released one game so far, Half-Life, CS was invented by someone else, TFC is hardly orignal, DM and DMC were both horrible on Half-Life.
Now, if HL2 comes out and is terrible, then ok, they have gone down hill, however I dont quite see how you think they have.
Keep in mind CS is THE most popular online game (outside of MMOs and even then it has alot of people playing at once, shame i dont have access to the stats any more) so it makes perfect sense to make it the online section of the game rather than some crappy DM knock off which probably would have been the alternative...

I'm SURE there will be TFC ported to Source within a few months.

They hired the CS team, and about that day CS started getting worse, which means Valve was getting worse since the CS team was part of them. And even before that there was the whole "TF is almost done!"->"TF is on indefinite hold!" thing, and since then there have been tons of false press about HL2 by Valve (and also other companies but obviously Valve only has direct control over what they say).
TFC wasn't original since it was a remake of TF, but today TFCv3 would be relatively original considering that practically every FPS out there right now is a pretending-to-be-realistic psuedotactical or a sneaker.

TFC was made for HL because Valve hired the original TF team to do it. So yes, Valve is really just making HL and nothing else. The fact is that Valve has become Id's alter ego (damn, mixed metaphors) - they're both gods of engine development, but where Id focusses on action, sexy lightsourcing, graphical effects, and licensing their engine to other developers, Valve focusses on story/character stuff, physics, and cultivating a mod community. Both approaches result in lots of sales - Id will sell the engine wholesale, and Valve will sell millions of copies as mods come out requiring HL2.

Meanwhile, Epic focusses entirely on solid multiplayer action, and their engines are more aimed at being exbandable developer-frameworks than traditional C-style "engines" like Source and Doom3. I personally find Epic to have a far more "modern" approach to game design - their systems have much better architecture, if worse features.

Personally, I'm annoyed by this news as well, but that's mostly because I'm friggin' sick of CS and how half the world seems to think its the only game in existence.

I feel kinda funny paying $50 for a game that could quite possibly never be released. Has anyone here paid for the privalege of playing CS:S yet?

My roommate bought it yesterday a few hours after it came out. I've been watching him play it today. It's pretty. And there's some cool physics.

That's about all I can say, since I've never played CS before.

i just handed over my cash (metaphorically). now i gotta wait 80 minutes to download. hope it's worth it.. also paid extortionate amounts of money to get the merchandise and then to get it delivered. ah well, that's the kinda thing that happens when banks give me credit cards.

Are cheaters still running rampant? That was what turned me off the game.

Cheaters? no... not yet though. It's been released yesterday, give a day or two :)

I parted with $50 of hard-earned cash to have the privilege to be one of the first to play it. I did pre-loaded everything though, so it was quite straight forward.

It's good. Graphically, it's nice looking, but not jaw-slapping, like Doom3 was. It's a LOT more polished than the previous CS, kind of a next-gen CS. The gameplay remains unchanged, weapons don't quite feel the same, they don't have the same 'immediacy'. Could be my dodgy connection and rather laggy computer (Athlon 1700, R9800 pro, I think the proc is getting hammered).

Sometimes, you can get FPS glitches, which is annoying, mostly to do with ragdolls getting stuck, and things like that.

I like it a lot, better than CS 1.6 IMHO. But I'm not one of those CS nazis, I just enjoy a bash now and then. I'm sure CS veterants will find things to whinge about, especially the weapon feel, which is a bit different.

Flashbangs are a hoot though. They really work this time. The SAW is finally useful, and the usual m4/AK are still the favorites, although with thicker shadows and more dramatic lighting, I've favored the use of lesser weapons with zooms (the Aug and the Sig 550). Shadows are really a pain (nice looking but very dark), but the muzzle flashes really stand out now.

You can pickup grenades of dead comrades, which is really cool. The frag grenades are slightly more powerful (I don't think by much, but you can still feel the difference), but can also dissorientate the enemy as a bonus. A nice addition. Smoke grenades are quite effective too.

The characters have a weird tendency of skating alot of the time. They don't have a strafe animation, or the anim is totally out of sync with the actual speed of the player, which is quite annoying for an engine like this.

The map layouts are unchanged, there are small cosmetic changes, but nothing major.

And lots of blood, particle effects, ...

I was mostly impressed by the environmental effects on the sound. That worked well.

It's good clean fun. I'll play it over CS 1.5-1.6 anytime. Some might disagree. I like it. I like it a lot!
Everything is better with Metal.

Because you are intimately familiar with the internal designs of both Doom3 and Source?

Based on what I've seen of Newell's coding style, Source is anything but "C-style". I've gathered the same impression from people who have worked with Doom3, but I haven't seen any of Carmack's code since Q2, which is hardly relevant.

So that awesome gameplay I saw in the half life videos is going to be single play only? That sucks. What a letdown. Too bad I hate CS. Oh well. Atleast I have Battlefield 2 to look forward to.
