getting started in the biz -- education and beyond
Hello, all! I am writing this because it is my life's greatest dream to one day be a game developer -- to write the stories for games and oversee the development of my visions. I realize this path is a long one, to be sure -- nobody in their right mind would put me in charge of creating games without any experience in the field, lol!
So, I have a series of questions:
1. I am currently enrolled in a community college, and have maxed out the C++ programming courses. At the moment, I am planning to transfer to the University of Michigan, since it is close by, and I have heard that they have courses geared towards game design. Is this a wise course of actions? Are there any colleges in michigan that would be better suited to a degree in game programming?
2. Should I be pursuing a game programming degree specifically, or would a general programming degree be a better choice? What would be the pros and cons of each?
3. What different pathways are there to someday writing my own stories for games and overseeing the creation of them? I've been composing music for games, writing stories, learning to program, and doing concept artwork as side hobbies, and would LOVE to use one (or more) of these skills to work my way to a position in a company that would allow me to be in charge of publishing my own ideas.
Yeah, I know this sounds like a child's dream to someday be an astronaut, but I am very serious in this pursuit... I have concepts for video games richocheting off the walls of my brain at a billion miles per second, and its all I can do to just try and write them down. It would please me to no end to see at least a couple of these published and sold to gaming fans worldwide! :-)
Thank you for any and all information you can supply.
