I'm looking for a simple compiler so I can continue studying C++. I don't want anything with "features." I don't feel like studying to figure out how to use a program that will probably become obsolete. I just want to click and compile. I can do the scripting in a text editor. Problem is, I can't find such a program. I was wondering if you guys had any names to help me out. I'd appreciate it.

Visual C++ express edition.

Search for express edition on msdn.microsoft.com . Thats free at the moment (Its in beta)

g++ should be free, open-source even - but might not be the easiest possible thing to get set up.

Screw all those other compilers.

Download the free Microsoft Visual C++ Toolki 2003.

Its an optimized compiler thats flamed to be better than the compiler shipped with Visual Studio 6.

Afterwards you'll have to download the WindowsSDK in order to make Win32 applications (Microsoft's attempt at forcing people to develop .net appplications).

Actually, I believe that's Microsoft's attempt to let people with slower connections have a chance to download the whole thing. If MS didn't want people developing native apps they would have never spontaneously released the compiler, along with the STL implementation -- much less the optimizing compiler no less. Recall that they were selling the standard version of VC++ 7.1 for $99, and now they're giving away a better compiler.

I just downloaded Dev-C++. :p I really appreciate everything you guys have done, I really do. If it hadn't been for these suggestions, I wouldn't have found this program.

The problem with the Borland compiler is that, as someone said earlier, they require info. I can't give out my address or phone number for anything due to personal reasons.

The other compilers would have been great I'm sure. But, I ran into so many problems downloading and installing them. I think it's my browser.

Anyway, as I said before, I really appreciate it. This has helped me complete a month-long quest.

Two things, the PlatformSDK is several hundred meg. Add that to the toolkit and you have an impossible download for most dialups, and a long one for most broadband customers. Secondly, VC++ 7.1 standard, at $100 is an IDE and the standard compiler. For that same $100 you can get that Same IDE and then just change the compiler to the toolkit edition, which is the optimizing version of that same compiler.

Not that that OP will be using those features, if he wants bare bones, however the IDE does let you just click compile [grin]
In time the project grows, the ignorance of its devs it shows, with many a convoluted function, it plunges into deep compunction, the price of failure is high, Washu's mirth is nigh.
