Well ive been programming games for a descent amount of time now, have done some larger projects(for a single man production) and have a game engine(without multiplayer support) ready. Im looking to make a multiplayer game now which should be playable over a server online. Basically I want to buy one and extend the engine. Now I dont need anything fancy for starters it should just work. Furthermore this project will not be public at first which means security isnt that important. Anyone have any good tutorials or the likes which will get me started? Perhaps an SDK or is there a Linux or Windows component one can use? It would be enough for starters if I could send strings from one user to the server which then sends it to everyone else. By the way the Engine is in C++, using Win32 API, SDL and OpenGL(DirectX soon to come). Thanks for any help. -CProgrammer

Well, there isn't a "standard" game server out there, since each server requires it's own logic to be written. However, there are a bunch of servers out there that can be extended, such as TNL(Torque Network Library), and I thought there was some review on another network engine(I looked it up, it was RAKnet).

You could also write your own socket wrapper(Make sure you follow the BSD sockets standard, since they'll compile under Linux). You could also download HawkNL, etc.

As you've already got your own game engine you should probably just use one of the many libs out there. Mostly they're pretty easy to use (especially if your already got your head around general programming it shouldn't be a problem). Google for network libs and you should find a few but off the top of my head there are three:

raknet
ptype
SDL_Net

The last one only applies if your using SDL, but I'd suggest looking into the first one - its even free if follow the GPL license. Can't remember the exact address but google will show you the way!

Hawk NL exists too though i've heard Raknet is better.
