thnaks alot IOFILE it was because i didn''t zero the memory of ddscaps one more question do you know of any reason why my diretdraw programs are blurry i thing it might have something to do with the refresh rate in the program being wrong but isn''t it supposed to be set to the optimal setting automatically and isn''t the optimal setting not supposed to be blurry, in windows the screen isn''t blurry but it in all my directdarw programs it is. What gives!? thanks NiNo

clean your monitor... just kidding
are you stretching your pictures? what screen res/ color mode are you using?

yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift...

No problem, always glad to help

About the blurriness, to tell you the truth, I''m not quite sure what is causing it. Just in case, I''ll ask if you''re resizing a surface with Blt, because if so then the surface WILL be anti-aliased, which could give it a blurry appearance. If you''re running in windowed mode (which I''m sure you''re not because the page flipping shouldn''t work in that case) the surfaces will get blurry if the window is any other size but what the buffers are. Are other games that use DDraw (games you haven''t written) blurry as well?

My recommendation would be to create a simple App that only runs at 640x480 and fill the buffer with white. Set up the flipping and then put just one black pixel in the middle of the screen. Is that one pixel blurry? If not, then add all of the other functions you would use in your program normaly until you see something that causes the blurriness.

It isn''t impossible that it could be the refresh rate "arguing" with your display and thus being your DX configuration, your graphics card, or your monitor''s fault, but that is less likely than a software problem. If possible, try your program on a different computer somewhere else and check to see if it works there. Then you would have a definite answer to whether it was hardware or not.

Good luck, and if you need help again, just ask.

Oh, not streched. Hmm... well, I do pretty much the same thing with my DDraw programs, so perhaps it IS your hardware. But do say if other DDraw games work on your computer as well without being blurry. Also, how are you displaying graphics, surfaces or pixel by pixel? Make sure if you edit the pixel data, you lock the surface first, THEN edit the array, and finally, unlock the surface once more. I''m sure none of the stuff I just said would be the cause of the problem, but it might as well be written, just in case.

Well, I''m going to bed, so i''ll check the thread tomarrow. Good night all. I''m too tired to think much more on the topic.

i tried the white background with one black pixel in it and the pixel is not blurry,
but the mouse pointer is blurry and it looks like it has a sort of ghostly blur beside it like you see the mouse pointer then there''s a blurred pointer right beside it

any suggestions?

thanks

Uhh, well, maybe it''s your monitor refresh, or hardware config. I would try it on another monitor or a different computer all together because a simple program like that should not have ANY problems. It must be your monitor or something. Sorry, I''m pretty much out of ideas!

i figured out the problem

my video card has a setting that automatically increases the refresh rate when games are run so i disabled that and now it works fine

my game is almost done, i''ll put it up for you guys to play when i''m done if you want, it''s a really awesome pong game starring bruce lee

see ya later
