PC first person shooters are killing me! Besides Half-Life 2, the last FPS I got for my PC was Red Faction 2, and before that it was No One Lives Forever 2, which I got almost exactly 2 years ago. All of these games have given me bad headaches or other physical ailments. NOLF2 gave me splitting headaches, RF2 caused severe cases of boredom and some headaches, and now HL2 is giving me minor headaches and making me want to puke. I can't play HL2 for more than about an hour and a half at a time or I get sick. It's terrible, since I really like it. No games prior to these games have ever done anything like this. I played HL1 without the slightest hint of discomfort, NOLF brought nothing but happiness, and RF did nothing but provide entertainment. No console FPS games do anything bad to me, I can play Halo for hours on end without getting sick (well, I do get sick of the game, but it doesn't make me physically hurt). So, does anyone know what could have caused this? I think it's the fact that all these newer FPS games love dark places and I have to turn the brightness way up. These games also have graphics that are too good for my computer, so I get kind of poor frame rates, around 30-40 FPS. The jittering might be making me sick. So what do you guys think? Should I just turn all the graphical settings in HL2 down to the minimum? It's what I'm tempted to do. By the way, I'm running an Athlon 2000+ with a GF4 TI4400 and 512mb RAM.

I think you should get some fresh air, and then see a doctor. (Before a certain someone on these boards recommends the same thing with considerable more vulgarity and in much larger red type. :) )

I also find it a little disturbing that the post begins talking about your physical ailments and ends with giving us a rundown of your PC's stats. :P

The only game that ever made me sick was FF7. Every single time, the game made my eyes hurt and everything looked all green and evil.

Yeah, I've seen articles before where people complained of motion sickness from playing FPS games. Turning off head bobbing can help if that's an option. I definitely think choppy frame rates could aggravate such a condition (I have an MD in absolutely nothing). Also, perhaps try playing on an LCD to see if that helps. I know that anything below a 70Hz refresh rate on a monitor really bothers my eyes. Make sure the game's refresh rate is set adequatley high, assuming it's an option.

It had to be said...

The first time I played Doom I got bad headaches and felt REALLY dizzy afterwards [grin]
I think you need to up framerates; smoother action feels more natural and is less likely to make you feel queasy.

Refresh rate is always at 85Hz for me, anything lower bothers me. I think it's just the choppy framerates. I might be more susceptible to motion sickness from games now that I'm older, too. Kind of like how going on a swing stops being fun and starts being nauseating when you get older.

EDIT: Nice, boolean. You rock :D

What!?! Yeah, maybe you are prone to motion sickness. Nothing like that makes me sick. Hey, how are you on roller coasters? (I love 'em!)

Also, you probably have pubic lice.[wink]

I'm also made out of solid gold. I am the Sapa Inca, Son of the Sun, bow before my might!

Now, in all seriousness, FPSes are making me sick...I've come to the conclusion that the only possible reason for this is that my computer is now obsolete. I formally request that one or more of the forum members get together to buy me a top of the line new computer. Please, think of the children.

Bah, I play Doom 3 at ~2FPS and I live. Be a MAN!
Can't you wind down the settings a bit?

I think his motion sickness means on of two things.
1. He enjoys the man parts
2. He's frickin nuts!

Oh, wait, that was his dreams, never mind.[wink]

What's your monitor's refresh rate? Sometimes a low rate won't be obviously [painful] until you play a game.

I always keep it as high as possible, which is 85Hz for my monitor. I can't stand anything lower than around 75.

I;ve always wondered what causes motion sickness in FPSs. I think it is a combination of things. Half-Life 1 didn't give me motion sickness when I first played it, but it will now. UT2003 used to make me sick, but no longer. Counter-Strike never gave me sickness whatsoever. Low framerate is the main cause I think, but also how many things are flashing (like laser blasts, explosions) affect you too. Also I think sound effects can have a bad effect too. My roommate would play Half-Life when I would try to program, and the crowbar clang and headcrab scream seemed to never stop. I hate those sounds now. That is actually my biggest deterent to getting HL2.
