Josh, Jessica and Anton love black clothes, black eyeliner and black nail varnish. Why? Because they're goths. Here they write about life as a goth in Norfolk.
The article. Oh dear. These kids will look back on this article in a few years and feel a bit silly...

Why "in a few years"? I know they're from Norfolk, but surely it won't take that long even for those two to learn how to read?

i like to listen to some of their goth music sometimes (normally i like experimental/hard techno or gabber). but all the wannabe ppl are just stupid. same as the candy ravers. dressed up like hell and they always talk about how early they have been in the scene (even if you never saw them in the club you visit the last 5 years) and how good the old times were (they are normally barely 15).
its just funny to see such ppl are also in other "scenes" (even the word has a bad touch since so many ppl use it to tell you how cool they are)
lmao at posers, wannabes and all the other stupid ppl who think they are cool just because they dress up like... like... i dont know.

i should go to bed now... i'm 25 since 2 hours and i need rest (+too much alcohol)

edit: those are really the worst goths i have ever seen. the "normal" goths i know just wear black clothes and like the music.(even i normally wear black clothes but that has nothing to do with music.)
Now get down n your hands and knees and start repeating "Open Source Good, M$ Evil", smacking your head against the pavement after each repetition. nce you have completed your training you may change your first name to GNU/, to show that you are free from the slavery of the closed source world. -Michalson oO

Oh my, they look as if they are about to post over in the 'writing for games' forum.

That comment is not meant to be offensive, just funny. Most artistic and creative people tend to dress differently. Sheesh. The only who might find this comment offensive would be the noobs who still think they can write the next Chrono Trigger.

Has anybody ever known a successfull goth?

No successful ones. I know one who is a complete burnout, and another who "turned gay" after being "taken advantage of" by an older goth.

Nice disclaimer [smile]

I dunno? Marilyn Manson? Is he considered goth? Seriously, he's just a gimick musician anyway. You know, like the Darkness.

I find it amusing so many of them try to be different by being...the same. Makes sense to me.

Southpark summed it up so well when Stan became a goth after being dumped. Comedy gold.

Same. Don't forget to wear your super-black pants! I almost did, and WOW, that was trippingly foolish.

99% of them grow out of it because they realise it's silly.

They are just trying to be part of a group, same as BIGFOOT's "wannabe ppl". Sounds a bit elitist to me, everyone wants some attention and generally making fun of them won't help. If you really think they are being silly, or are offensive to your or someone elses elitist group, you could tell them why, and even if they got really pissed, it would have more impact in their minds than calling them stupid or otherwise outcasting them, which just reinforces them, because they are in a small group and will stick together, or if they are alone, they will have no support which creates problems as well (possibly suicide).

Like I said, unless they're hurting someone, give em a break.

What is gothic anyhow? If you ask me I’d say it has very little to do with dressing dark or establishing ludicrous nicknames for ones self. It’s not about fitting in or looking cool. Isn’t part of the concept that a person is not concerned how/what others think (thus detaching oneself from the popularity-contest of society)?
The line “After a while I saw a few goths in a group outside McDonalds I thought that they looked really cool” sums up opinion of these kids. There is absolutely nothing wrong with individuality, but this is not it. This is the exact opposite. In reality, by dressing like such to stand out, these teenagers are more conforming than those they are trying to impress with their supposed anti-conformism. It is very shallow and it displeases me to read through the article.
On the other hand I am generally an accepting person and if these three kids feel good by pretending to be ‘goth’ – which is a pretty vague indefinable thing - then good on them. The negative side effect is that this breed of ‘goths’ create a negative sterotype that is imposed on those ‘real’ goths who are deep thinkers and actual individuals (not that I have associated with many).
To sum up: I dislike what these kids are trying to achieve but I accept that what makes them happy is their business.

Side note: I would refer to very few, if any, of the bands mentioned in that article as ‘goth’ bands.
