Times have changed. It's like in most forums, everything asked and said is about 3D. What happened to 2D game development today? What has been going on with it especially now that mobile gaming is growing but it can't support 3D yet. What is its direction?

For one thing, mobile gaming now has growing support for 3d, and I'm sure this will continue to be the case. You don't see as much information about 2d, because it hasn't really changed much - the information in old tutorials and articles still largely applies, with the only real changes being in the APIs and/or languages used (ie. DirectX may be vastly different now). It's generally considered to be a fairly simple task to adapt the theory of any techniques found to your chosen language/API however, so for the most part, the same old tutorials are still doing quite a good job. As for 2d on mobile platforms, much the same theory applies for the most part, but in general, there are less system resources to work with.
