For potential helpers who don't want to read all of the material below, how do i uninstall half life 2 without using the windows uninstaller? -thanks OK fellows, I am a desperate man. I bought HL2 Silver Ed last night. After updating drivers, getting a lesson in loading times, and countless reboots, I got HL2 to work. However, the frame rate was not what I wanted, so i turned down some of the graphical settings. After I hit the "OK" button to return to the game, it froze. I waited for a long while (several minues), at which point I attemped to get some responce from the computer by the Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Start+D, and Alt-Tab combos. None worked so i rebooted once more. So windows rebooted and I started up HL2, however, it gave me the "warning" message: "Steam has found a problem with you local games file. Game files will now be reaquired from Steam servers." So I strike the OK button, at which point the same warning message appears. After about twenty clicks in a row I give up. So I search the support database at steampowered.com (has nothing), I sign up for the forums (which won't allow me to post), attempt to uninstall half-life so i can re-download it (no uninstaller), and I even try to click the "Download and Install" button for HL2 in the "Browse Games" tab on steam (it doesn't do anything.) Any help would be great Thank you SO much!

Delete the cache files in the Steam/Steamapps folder, or at least rename them. There are also some files located further into the directory structure that you may wish to delete. It's pretty obvious which ones.

Are you by chance running something older than WinXP ?I was, and had to upgrade to winXP in order to keep from getting various random system crashes. The option screen crashes on one system for example. Higherspeed is right about you may need to delete the files and redownload them.

Check the news from the Steam launcher, I seem to remember them having something about what to do if you are experiencing crashes. Other than that I think if you just delete the files steam checks and will automatically redownload what you need.
