Avoiding WinAPI

I''m just learning DirectX, ''cause good old DOS game times seem to have gone. I''m working with Borland C++Builder (BCB) and I like VCL, because I don''t have to deal with WinAPI directly. I wanna concentrate on my game development and not waste code creating a window. Questions: 1) Can I easily combine VCL and DirectX/Direct3D? 2) will that cause performance problems? 3) Anyone can tell his/her experiences with BCB/DirectX? 4) Has VC++ greater performance than BCB? thanx Wunibald

Are you really that lazy? Creating a window really isn''t that hard... it only takes me about ten minutes at the most. And then, if I''m going fullscreen, the time is even less.

Yes I am that lazy ;0). (And I like Borland more than M$).
Once had the power of RAD, giving it up is really hard :0).
Well, ok, for games I don''t need RAD, but I just don''t want to install VC++ if I can avoid it somehow.
Ok, if there are any good reasons (tell me!), I''ll do it and change to the dark side :0).

u might wanna have a look at glut (opengl) it handles all window creation messages etc + it works on multiple platforms

I recommend that you read LaMoth´s "Windows Game Programming For Dummies" or any similar book. Win32 programming is easy and funny. But why are you using Borland? Everybody use VC6?

Thanks, Indosuaros.

I use VC++ 5 because this fix perfectly with directx (and the directx SDK)... Yeah, MS monopoly!! But in this case work for me.

I don''t worried about class, object, rad and ide and another stuff.. I programmer in C++ for windows+directx and don''t need nothing more.

Learning windows was a pain in the **BLEEP**
..
If you have MSVC 6.0, then you can use the app wizard to construct the skeleton of your app without typing in the GOOD OLD Win32 code... or..

Create your own Win32 skeleton code and save it on a disk and throw it in a safe somewhere.

But still... unfortunately.. DirectX is an API for Windows so you need to understand the Win32 code to utilize DirectX.

Welcome to the headaches of nonlinear code =-)

Good luck

Hehehe! I create win32 apps with the VC++ appwizard (no MFC) and it gives me a nice window.

Hi

Its allways good to know everything...down to the last bit and pin of the microprocessor

However this is not allways possible

the bad news is if u are going to make a game u will need to go down even to ASM stuff....so I think doing a win32 window setup will look like a child play compared with "MMX optimized Alpha Blending ASM routines" ...

if u wanna make a database or other general programm...go with Visual stuff whatever Borland or MS ...dont think i does really matter....but i personally favorise Borland's on historical reasons.

Dont think that choseing an IDE or language over another is going to make u a great programmer or even help u do great stuff.

Everybody can be a great programmer even in Cobol if u so like...and also can do worst even in latest VC version 3500

For THE GAME.. u have to do allmost every think manually...so better get prepared .. do that child play of createing a window...it will not hurt... u will know a little more also..

in the end u will go more "dirty" that that..even with the help of DirectX, Glide, OpenGl and other API's..

Learn the win32 aoi and encapsulate the stuff you need in classes. Hey, in DX you waste 90% of your time dealing with the dirt X interface, and still most of the developers use it.

Thanx a lot for all your good answers.

@zedzeek: Heard good things about GLUT/OpenGL, but I prefer DirectX, ''cause its game standard and has very useful features.

@Indosuaros: Yep, heard about this book. Right now I''m reading
Robert Dunlop''s "Teach yourself DirectX". Perhaps I''m going to read godfather LaMothe''s book, too.

@AnonymousPoster: Borland made up that IDE lack in BCB5.
As in VC++ and Delphi, we''ve a realy nice class-explorer now :0)
Some very important IDE features were added (as Delphi has them for a long time). Really, release 5 rules!

@bogdanontanu: I really hope, I don''t have to deal with assembler
anymore (as in my last project, where I had to add new features to a 20''000 lines assembler sprite engine (AniVGA)).
