Just noticed that Trillian 3.0 is out and it's awesome. I bought Trillian Pro a while ago and am now glad that I did. You guys should all check it out. If you guys have fanboy syndrome towards something else, that's fine. Just know that Trillian now kicks ass.

Thanks dude. I've been running Pro 3 alpha since it came out. I can't wait to see what the final version is like.

Man, I really don't know what's going on in the minds of UI designers these days. Colorful fisher-price graphics aside, that default contact list requires over 200 vertical pixels to hold 7 names? Jeez!

[lol] Yea I guess people nowadays love the flashy graphics - I myself like a clean simple interface - ie. old aim - I don't even use any internet communication software anymore - maybe I should write my own [smile].

Agreed, though AIM seems to be going that way too [sad].

I completely agree, that's why you have to make a skin for it... Salsa style [smile].

Nah, that's why you should use Miranda. I use 0.3.4 alpha and I wouldn't give it up for Trillian 3.0.

I tried to use miranda and its a pain in the ass. I still can't get that piece of shit to work with my accounts.

Yeah, miranda is a pain. I use gaim and am pretty happy with it. It doesn't have all the "latest features" but simple IM, chat and occasional file transfer is enough for me.

There was a wonderful thread about that a while back. I saved the pictures, but I'm on the wrong comp...

I think I'll stick to Trillian 2 though. #3 really seems like a step backwards to me. Looks like the main change is all the options they *removed*. First, there's way less configuration possible for individual IM connections. You can't specify different nicknames for different IM's. You can't set as many options for IRC. You can't enable/disable individual sounds. For some reasons, the smilies aren't animated any longer (That was always my favorite feature in Trillian. Had some awesome smilies).

As for the UI, I had a nice clean skin for Trillian 2. That obviously doesn't work with #3, so maybe I'll give it another try when I find a better skin. :)

I've used Trillian since the very early days (way before they started charging), and I absolutely LOVE Trillian 3.0 Pro. I'm generally not a big fan of paying for a software that I have to "resubscribe" to in order to keep it year-after-year. Trillian, however, is absolutely worthy of my money. It's a fantastic piece of software that seems to get better and better with each and every iteration.

Also, for people that think the buddy list names take up too much space, let it be known that you CAN change the size of each buddy list entry. There are 5 settings: off, tiny, small, medium, and large. I personally use "medium," but if you only want each entry to take up about sixteen verticle pixels, you can have that. Or if you want each entry to take up sixty-four verticel pixels, you can have that too.

And the skin is pretty Candy Land-ish, but the reason the Trillian people have it as the default skin is because a majority of their userbase wants simplicity over complexity. Anyone that knows a thing or two about computers can select a skin from their rather large skin archive (and chances are if you were using a popular Trillian 2.0 skin, that it has already been converted to Trillian 3.0).

Also, I haven't seen a single option in any other version of Trillian that IS NOT in Trillian 3.0 (though I don't use the IRC client; I think it's horrible). The only complaint I do have is that the message history that each window contains now takes a second to show up, as opposed to how it used to show up instantaneously. I also don't like the new "History Viewer" that you can use to see how much you chatted with a person over any period of time. I preferred the old method where it just opened up a text log. Other than that, Trillian 3.0 is basically Trillian Perfected, in my opinion.

Agreed. Unless Trillian 3.0 has tabbed IM windows, Gaim's buddy pounce feature, and file transfers work on AIM, MSN and Yahoo, I'll stick with Gaim. Not that file transfers work perfectly in Gaim, but that's what it would take to make me switch.

Uh, Trillian has had tabbed IM windows since Trillian 2.0 Pro. Not sure what a buddy pounce feature is, and Trillian's file transfer system has always worked better than the "real IM client's" file transfer systems for me.

Every time I reccomend Trillian to people, everyone freaks out and says you can't use it on Linux.

I use Trillian 2.0 Pro and like it a lot. I like the alert abilities that let me send messages when someone signs on, but it doesn't let me modify the messages. If Trillian 3.0 fixed that, then I'll probably have to subscribe again.

I think file transfers worked before 2.0 came out. It did have problems when there were firewalls, but they have gotten much better with that. It took me a while to customize it to remove all the features that were turned on when I upgraded though.
