So my copy came in today (Collectors Tin. Anyone want to buy the laser cell art? :P). I just got around to playing it, and man.. is that game strange! I'm not sure what the hell those people are, but they are freaky as hell. Anyone experience the greatness that is RE4 yet? :)

Yeah, I bought it yesterday and I've been playing way more than I should. It's a great game, much better than all the others in the series. There are a couple things I don't like, though. First, Capcom really needs to stop using bad controls as a way to make the game more difficult. I've read that Capcom didn't include things like strafing and shooting while moving because the game would be too easy with better controls. That really annoys me. And what's with the lack of analog control? Why are we still pressing B to run? I can't think of any reason for it. I don't mean to say that the controls are terrible, cause they're definitely not, but they could have made them much better than they are. The other thing I don't like are all the parts where you need to press a button repeatedly as fast as you can. I don't see how that's supposed to be fun. Anyhoo, those two things aside, I'm really loving the game.

Oh I love this game. Playing this game with a bunch of friends is great! It's like watching a scary movie, but because you cant tell what's gonna happen people jump and scream.

The controls are part of the Game Design. They didnt want you running through every room blasting the hell out of everything. They didnt want it to be like Devil May Cry. They wanted you walking through corridors. In horror movies, you never see a character running the entire time to do average things. by setting the default move to walk, they put focus on the dark ambiance, and thats RE's strongest element. With easy controls and no ambiance, you'd have a really short and dissapointing game.
Im losing the popularity contest. $rating --;

If you include bad controls in your game design as a way to artificially make the game more difficult, you're being lazy. There are other ways to make a game challenging. Doom 3 has great controls, yet that game scared the shit out of me. And honestly, who actually walks in Resident Evil games? I really think it's time for Capcom to come up with a better control scheme.

You know, there is a lesson learned here and it's this: allow both types of controls. Makes everyone happy :)

Well yeah, but that wasn't really Garmichael's point. I hear ya, though.

It sounds like a great game. I don't think I'll buy it but I might rent it now that I've got a new PS2 slim.

edit:
... It's not on PS2, is it? I just got done browsing amazon, and it only said that RE4 is on GameCube. Nothing about PS2. :(

Still makes no sense since my Gamecube box says "Only for" in the corner.

Pointless :)
