Hi friends, I need your help in some cygwin matters. I am a newbie in using cygwin. I have downloaded and installed cygwin in my xp machine. The cygwin starts well, and gnuplot, gcc, ssh commands work also. But when I put command 'xinit', it show the following error message in a Cygwin/X window. " A fatal error has occurred and cygwin will now exit. Please open /tmp/XWin.log for more information. Vendor: The Cygwin/X Project. Realease: 6.8.1.0-9 Contact: cygwin-xfree@cygwin.com XWin was started with the following command line: X:0 " The console proceeded as "Fatal server error: cannot open log file "/tmp/XWin.log " waiting for X server to begine accepting connections. .. .. .. WinDeinitMultiWindowWM noting shutdown in progress giving up. xinit: Connection refussed (errno 111): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such procss (errno 3): Server error. " I saw in the /tmp/XWin file. But I could not make out anything from it. Can anybody write a solution to the problem? Lucy

Make sure you've got ntsec turned on [check cygwin faq for details], and then check the permissions on tmp.

It might not be that, but 99% of cygwin problems I've had were permission related.

Did you actually install the X server?

Did you try reinstalling?

Did you post in the right forum? (*cough* GDNet Lounge *cough*)

xinit works fine on my system after a recent install. Try rerunning setup.exe so everything gets updated, making sure the actuall X server is getting installed.
