Ok, is there a Mac/*nix tool to get at the contents of a RAR?

In time the project grows, the ignorance of its devs it shows, with many a convoluted function, it plunges into deep compunction, the price of failure is high, Washu's mirth is nigh.

Ok. I feel stupid now.

I think I'd ask for a rewrite on this one. For one thing it claims to be portable but only includes a DirectX implementation. The diction is also a tad on the informal side. Also, would it be rude to ask for a change in license on the source code? I don't think that GPL code is all that appropriate for an article where practically anyone who reads the thing would be creating deriviative works.

I think that's an excellent point. I concur, it's impractical to foist the restrictions of GPL on article example code. I think we should make this a public policy that we require any code presented in working order in any article we publish to be public domain. This means that you can show illustrative snippets that don't function on their own and not make them generally available, but any complete examples have to be public domain.

This is to allow people write articles based on commercial or contract work they've done without creating a conflict of requirements.

Thoughts?

Obviously, I have no problems with it, having brought it up myself. But we might want to allow zlib, MIT or BSD licenses, which are also non-viral.

On a second look through, the use of DirectX with respect to the actual arc ball implementation is reasonable, since the only D3DX functions used are things like quaternions. With that in mind, I think I'll only ask about a change in license, or at least dual license on the actual arcball implementation. The rest of the code for the sample application can probably stay GPL'd since it doesn't relate directly to the article.

Should I wait for a final license change template on this one, or just send out a request sans template?

Go ahead and send a request. I'll get working on a license change request template this evening/tomorrow, depending on when I get done with work.

Ok, request sent. Contents as follows:

Dear Pete Campbell,

We are interested in publishing your submission titled "Portable Arcball Camera System" however there is one problem: the source code is licensed under the GPL. For the majority of the 3D Engine code this isn't an issue, but for the actual arcball code to be GPL is problematic. Basically anyone writing an arcball routine after reading your article would then be creating a derivative work, which given the viral nature of the GPL, forces them to GPL their code, and GameDev.Net endeavors to support the creation of both commercial and open source titles.

We generally prefer the relevant source code for our articles to be public domain, but will accept non-viral licenses like zlib.

Also, as a side note, the sample application's arcball rotation isn't very responsive. It feels like the radius of of the arcball is off for the size of the model.

Should it be possible to change the license on the mentioned source code, we would be happy to publish your article. We look forward to hearing from you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Editor-in-Chief at oluseyi@gamedev.net at any time. Thank you for choosing GameDev.Net.

Any response to this? Otherwise we'll just have to reject it, as we can't publish code that places restrictions or contains viral clauses.

None yet. I'd still want to give it a week or so before we close this one though.

Still no response.
