You can have my computer when you pry it out of my cold, dead fingers. And remove the socket from the back of my neck. No, not really, wishful thinking.

I''ve thought about that, and it leads me to this question: do you know how to darn socks? Do you know how to make tools from iron ore? Obviously i''m taking this a little ways past living without computers, but I think we don''t know how to live without technology anymore. It''s like we''ve come so far, that we''d be set really far back if we didn''t have it anymore, cause we''ve gone so far past the basics.

ppl themselves would be fine without computers. i know a lotta ppl who would have pretty much the same life without computers. but not myself, i would die in less than a day if there''s no computer
and society as a whole: i guess the whole thing would be pretty much dead if suddenly are taken away from use: all the bank accounts, credit cards, even traffic light controllers... ouch!

Actually aresenius, I do know how to darn socks, and forging tools out of iron isn''t that hard (we wouldn''t need ore, there''s plenty of scrap metal for years to come) but that doesn''t mean I want to do it. *grin*

very easily we could there is a reason we go to school. computers are making some people dumber and dumber. IN the end it is just a facy toy. Besides, i certainly hope that everyone here would rather go out with people than sit in front of your computer. there is nothing wrong with playing but some times there has to be more real stuff going on.

Besides, if we could make the most advanced airplane ever conceived in the 60''s with the aid of nothing but a pencil, we can live without computers today.

I am not text, I am not organized pixels, I am not killed by turning off your monitor, I am not isolated by turning off your computer. I just am.

Food for thought: If you can find it, the old series Connections narrated by James Burke is awesome in explaining technological dependence. The first show itself was great, and talked about how little we all about survival because of technology.

As far as computers go, the Third World would probably get along without too much trouble eventually, but the financial institutions and prosperity of the First World would go down the tubes. But even the First World would recover in a few years, as we returned to the pre-silicon 1950s ways of doing things. (With a lot fewer conveniences)

According to Burke and other research, bards in the 16th century could remember the equivalent of several full length novels, in order, roughly verbatim. I''d be hard pressed to find anyone today who can still do that. Tech isn''t making us dumber, it''s weakening our memory. It acts as external storage, freeing us up to remember vitally important things like the lyrics to Britany Spears songs and stats of our favorite ball players... *shudder*

Depends. Are they game designers???

Yeah, the trick is not to lose the original know-how. Then, the trick is to get weathy enough to be able to employ the thousands of drafters and engineers that would be replaced by a single CAD program.
